Do No Harm

Do No Harm There is a woman in Karachiwho gives birthin a filthy hospital bed.She lay, separated by a thin curtainfrom a man with shrapnelin his leg,his burnt skin hanginglike ribbons. In Rwanda,in great mother Africais a tentwith the shivering, the dying.Children and menin shock, from a lack of blood, food, fresh water. I’ve heard the largest causeof childhood deathis diarreah. How’d we let that happen? It is hard to tellfriend from enemy in Basra.Bombs hit a wedding party, assumed to be Al Qaida.Enough of those kinds of accidentsand we’ll have no need to make distinctions anymore. Do no harmin the country, nor in the brightest downtown. If only we applied that oath. Who does more evil?Is it the abortionistfor killing the unborn?Or the protesterfor not considering the woman, and her child’s future health?Perhaps it is the manfor splitting, for finding a flight of fancy.Who claims creditfor the works of Mengele, and his cruel vivisections?Did his findings end upin our medical practices? No, do no harmto our enemies, nor those to whom we are at peace. For, if nothing else, what is the true measure of humanity,if not our compassion to each other?

An Honorable theme, mark!

Would indeed that we could live up to those words, "Do No Harm"! I've seen the Hellishness of War, shared the plight of the Homeless, and driven myself, though blaming others, to the brink of suicide! In all of this, I've never seen any respite from the age-old doctrine of Man's inhumanity to Man!

thank you Lenny!

indeed man is a cruel and devilish little creature. I think we ignore God's mercy, and the lessons we can learn from it and rely on our own ways far too much. the results, as you have well seen, are tragic. Mark W. Galatians 5:22-23 "22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against these, there is no law!" My favorite verse(s) in the Bible

Mark

So many forget just how good off they are. Kids complain because mother puts brussels sprouts on their plate, yet they aren't thoughtful enough to be thankful for the fact that they have access to vegetables - and have a (hopefully) loving mother serving them. Reminds me of the movie Seventh Sign w/ Demi Moore - God's grace runs out, but the world is given a (third!) chance to get things right. It will be interesting to see what happens when the clock runs out here for real. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point in the wrong direction!" -"God is good, but never dance in a small boat."

Do No Harm!

Mark. Its great. How beautfully you picturised the miserable condition of Humanity, in words. When I think of all the bad things happening in this beautiful world of God, I feel so sorry for it. Did God want us to change it into a hell?.How would He think of us? Though as the relegions tell us, humans are the best of God's creation, but sometimes I feel ashamed of being a Human when I see all that the humans are doing. I really liked your message. Really touched me. Thanks for sharing it with us. Love, Wafi

thank you so much, Wafi

I too have wondered that, if we are God's highest creation why we treat each other so miserably. To deny a brother or sister is to deny our Creator. It is easy to dehumanize someone because of national pride, religion, race, sex, etc. but is this what God would want us to do? I'd say no! And I agree with you, there are times I want to hang my head in shame for being a human being, seeing what we've been capable of. Thank you for your wisdom and comment :) Mark W. Mark

do look into that movie it is excellent. I see nothing that needs editing in this poem It comes straight from the heart. If only it could be so but as long as there is that competition to be at the top I do not see it coming to pass. I have just read Jess's comment and she is so right. Chrys

and agree with your remark that the competition at the top will prevent it from happening. I will most definately check out that movie. Mark W. thank you Shan

I wish my heart was noble, but I'm not sure sometimes if there is nobility left in man's heart. You are kind. Mark W.
