The Gargoyles' Last Stand

a piece of stone, well formed
on a cloud much too tender
to support the weight burdening it

tonight
it will rain gargoyles

"I don't own an umbrella"
I tell you
and try not to look
too concerned

they will puncture
every sphere of smoke
in this room

it will be their last stand

Dear Proprietress, Was just

Dear Proprietress, Was just about to go to bed when I saw you'd posted something new. Your imagery is beautiful as always and I especially like the third stanza ("and try not to look too concerned" - I love that line because I can just picture it, don't know how to explain) I have my thoughts on the meaning of your gargoyles but would you care to elaborate a little? your ~Stella

sweet Stella,

thank you so much for your read, glad to provide you with a little poetic nightcap. :-) I like to keep my pieces open to interpretation. personally, I think that it isn't important what I had in mind while writing it. whatever you, dearest Stella, see in the gargoyles is exactly what they are, what they always have been and what they always will be. I create the poem and you bring it to life. (and the other way around, of course.) I feel that this is the way poetry should be seen, but this is just my opinion... I am looking forward to your newest poem and am ever so happy that you have found yourself again! your Proprietress

You’re absolutely right

You're absolutely right sweet Proprietress, that's how I like to experience poetry as well and how I value it. However, there seemed to be so much underlying meaning in this piece.. ; ) I will cherish what your words mean to me. Do LOVE the gargoyles image though! I think everyone seems to. Just saying the word out loud... there's something about it : ) love, ~Stella

Crimson heart

Worry not that the Gargoyles are caried as rain, they spend most of their days directing the water of life onto the earth, from their lofty stands, they look out over this land, to frighten the strangers that wished us ill. I in my silly way find them quite attractive, it must be the picasso thing irritating a part of my mind LOL. Let us now talk of the rest of the piece that was clouded with a small fear of being alone some where, these things will pass so I am told, and freedom of the spirit will prevail. Not to worry I will keep taking the tablets, Yours Ian.T

Lord Richard of Tablets,

I thank you for your time and comment! I have always loved gargoyles, even as a child. they occur in the first scene of the first dream I can recall: I was standing in front of an old castle, looking up at a gargoyle. the picture is still vivid in my mind. those tablets, can you tell me where to get them? I am in need of a few myself today... your Proprietress

Smoke, Clouds and Gargoyles

Oh the mystery, oh the weights, so heavy-so light, so strangely curling and grotesque, diaphanous and magic this seems about more than the rain as Ian says, something unsolved, something like a lump in the throat, uncanny. I hope is only a passing discomfort as you deserve the rays of the sun on your grey grimacing stones and they will become fine music. Evocative for me, I am no sage when it comes to freestyle as you so aptly pointed out in the last poem of mine, so the comment will have to be the impact. And just yesterday we talked of the rain at my French Conversation class "Il pleut des cordes", I had the "Its raining cats and dogs" and my 'aunt' here in Norway ran out saying "The cats and dogs are falling down"! What 'translated for me!' do you say in German? Ich kan nicht D. As aye Ann of Norway.

Ann

It´s "Es regnet in Strömen" (it´s raining in streams) in German. Everytime I say this, my father will say "Na, dann ist es ja gut, dass es in Strömen regnet, und nicht hier." (well, it´s a good thing it is only raining in "Streams" and not here), but I don´t know if that´s a popular saying... Love from Nina from Germany, where it´s the 28th already, too P.S. Thanks for pointing out Rett´s B-day

oh no, Ann of Norway,

I think you misunderstood my last comment! the suggested improvements were just minor ones. I perceive you as a master of your craft. that is why your opinion means so much to me. and besides, as Nina once said about you: your comments are more poetic than most people's poems... :-) I thank you, my Snowqueen! your Proprietress

If only every human being on

If only every human being on earth fell from their gargoyle stone-like minds into their poetic hearts there would be no rain on any parade, cause we'd be dancin' anyway. Imagine Peace! And thanks for the pointer too, Ann; Rett, if perchance you read this thread of gargoyles and rain, I wish for you an amazing day. (It's a blizzard here in O-HI-O.) birdie birdie in the sky i sure am glad gargoyles can't fly Love to All ~Anna "We have to try to get rid of the notion of time. Oh no Ann of Norway

You flatter me, me who has written hundreds of letters for years but only written poetry a few times in my youth and then 200 in 2008, what does one call that? My craft, painting, writing, dancing, teaching all have been my crafts and only recently...I have written verse. I will write to you privately I think now. From the misted grey magic of a damp day, headache and all! Ann of Norway.

Look Out Below!

Raining gargoyles--an ominous and yet amusing image, and--above all--a memorable one! I really fear umbrellas would not afford much protection... I am thinking that a plural possessive is called for in the title (Gargoyles'); but perhaps not... Greatly enjoyed!

Rob,

I hope the titles right now!? I'm from Germany so I tend to make mistakes like that... AND I'm also completely helpless when it comes to grammar, in every language, unfortunately. thank you for pointing that out!

Hearts of Stone

we've forgotten stone men of keeps and castles and cathedralled steeps spouting drains of rain spat panes cascading wading through baptismal waters fathers flee and hide your daughters for the waking hearts of stone are falling from their keystone thrones! ............................... (Sorry, couldn't resist riffing and improvising on your absoulutley beautiful, wonderful and enthralling Gabriel-Garcia-Marquez-like image and amazing fantastical tale here!) I will read this to my children before bed, and they will love it! Makes me want to illustrate your poem as children's book. Thank you, my proprietress. -Michael

rain soothing the winds of souls come home

Esmeralda high above leaning on quarried rudiments the water flows the water goes the cloud burst landscapes bruised and broken souls awaiting moments floating singing down from lairs above now shinning lacquered living eyes the gargoyles chance in thunder dance

The Gargoyls last stand

Kata I do not know about their last stand as they have stood for time imemorial. We look back and they are there on one form or another just watching. I only they could talk what wonders they have seen, what would they impart. I hope you have a strong umbrella in your dreams. Gargoyles and water seem to be inseperable but they will fly when they want without the aid of you or I. There they will always be looking down on you and me. I did study langaues at night school. I did French and German. I love German and understand it more. I found as you say when tranlating it to English to me it is back to front. So I am having fun on this site even with all the American spellings and meanings too etc. Electric Blue
