MARY SLESSOR
MARY SLESSOR My choice of African woman Was not read from Bush House Her noble works which echo through The past, are engraved in our hearts Though Scottish by birth and skin
Great mother of Africa, a lady of all
And here, she rested, eternally. Young, she came, full of strength Stopped the killing of twins, and saved Those entangled in witchcraft spells She shocked many missionaries Lived with ease, amongst the locals With warmth, she spoke Efik fluently And sat in court with the natives A designate, duly deservedOrder of Saint John of Jerusalem
To the cast off, she brought love And gave them home to live A mother of mothers in all respects She was more than that, with a heart From Europe, planted here, in Africa— t. reflexion, Jan 23, 2009
