Big Yellow Bus

 The big yellow bus flies ‘round the corner,
Brakes’ scraping autumn’s cerulean air,
Intent on picking up the sojourner,
Young girl with velvet ribbons in her hair.
It’s the first day of school.

Plaid dress, white lace, by loving fingers sewn,
Hemmed to proper length well below the knee,
She stands pigeon-toed and shy, blonde curls blown;
Reading, writing ‘rithmetic, that’s the key.
It’s the first day of school.

Sturdy brown shoes, Daddy tied the laces;
She stares down at her feet, afraid to look
At bouncing heads, strange and grinning faces,
Each clutching to heart the critical book.
It’s the first day of school.

The big yellow bus at last comes to land;
Six years of waiting—now a little fear—
Reluctant to let go of mother’s hand,
The young girl says goodbye with smiling tear.
It’s the first day of school.

Big Yellow Bus

Dee, What an awesome poem. Full of detail I enjoyed this immensely! Every time I hear the school bus go by my house it brings back memories. _____________________________ To write a touching poem, you must gently stir the soul, if it brings forth tears or smiles, then the story was beautifully told. ________Janice Pearce_________

You really did a nice job on this one. Plenty of detail. How she's dressed and her feelings of scared, but the door will open on the big yellow bus. I remember ............ Thank you for this one. Patty

Dear Janice, Race, and Patty

Thank you for reading and commenting here. I'm glad you got the nostalgia feeling. I've been thinking about days past lately--lots of material. Sorry it took so long to get back--been moving--what a drag. Now, I'm sort of done and I can catch up on neopoet. Have missed it greatly for about 2 weeks. Thanks again. Dee
