David Bowie's Spiders

How would you like to be surrounded
by huge, bright orange spiders
Their elongated legs, like spears bearing down
as they traverse the terrain.
Guided by a green moon
hung in a black sky?

Instead of regular eyes
they are equipped with infrared
and your heat glows
no matter how well you feel you're hidden from them
but it's not you they want -
you're merely a curiosity.

Their only weakness -
Zor's lightning
Purple bolts thrown down
in a fit of rage
engulfing these beings in flame
as they scream.

But, from the ash
and the dead
rises the Phoenix
bio-luminescent bacteria
the true 'natives'
before these creatures came

Well done with the descriptive colors example guided by a green moon hung in a black sky ( excellent imagery ) But where does that title come from mom

One of his songs, Ziggy Stardust

"Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with Weird and Gilly And the spiders from mars. He played it left hand But made it too far Became the special man, then we were Ziggy's band." Just figured that it would be an apropos title, as he's talking about wacked out spiders! ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication And silent replies that swirl invitation Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea A grim intimation of what is to be" - Pink Floyd

fantastic

imagery--i love it when poets go for broke and unleash the imagination. i've always respected david bowie for refusing to be ziggy stardust again, it would be so absurd! he's too old! this is like a mixture of JG Ballard and some obscure Star Trek episode to good to have existed. good job! gb

Thank, man!

I've always loved that song, and really don't know what brought on such a write (on either end!) Maybe it was from watching nature programs on the Discovery channel, and seeing some really funky creatures! The David Bowie thought came later, and reading Rett's 'Mindset' poem with commentary from Jim solidified the entire thing. Thanks for reading! (and commenting!) ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication And silent replies that swirl invitation Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea A grim intimation of what is to be" - Pink Floyd

don't feel too bad for them!

They were a disruption! I personally hate spiders, and am very afraid of them, so I wouldn't feel too bad seeing this. Of course, I would have fainted in fright long before! I kind of explained where all of this came from in the comment above. What's that in the bowl, then? Looks like a pepper dish - I see some jalepeno there! Spicy! ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication And silent replies that swirl invitation Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea A grim intimation of what is to be" - Pink Floyd

A shiver of a write

What you on, and where can I get me some? LOL I love this, the imagery's wild, and I really enjoyed the pace and pattern. Don't really know what "internal logic" is....but if you mean does the poem hold together throughout, staying focused on the subject, then yeah, its good. The progression from what if through description and on to event works real good. I like the last verse very much. It has a connotation of life's tenacity, that no matter what happens life continues. Like that a lot. And of course...I love spiders! Respectfully, Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

Thanks, Jim

Thanks not only for the comment, but also being an inspiration. Yeah, I think that's basically what the internal thing means. How good was the flow.. everything grammatically correct.. yaddi yaddi. What am I on? Unfortunately, nothing good! Some Aleve for some muscular pain, but that's it. Disappointing, I know, but gotta stay legal! :~) ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication And silent replies that swirl invitation Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea A grim intimation of what is to be" - Pink Floyd

Jess,

the title is quite an eye-catcher for me. I love Bowie and am a bit phobic when it comes to spiders, so this was a real allurement. I'm not really into the whole science fiction theme but I sure enjoyed the read!!! thank you, your Proprietress
