Sadness at Christmas 2008

"Sadness at Christmas 2008" Ann Harvey  (In the rhythm of Noel Coward!)

Was it a shadow

Was it a dream

That passed that grey patch of mist in the town

Was it a bird

Was it a thought

Or was it your letter

Mentioning nought

Coming from far away

To heal the world you say

The winding sheet of mists

Around the wars and sadness

Of coffins dark and dismal

Products of pure madness

The day expresses this to me

Why dwell on sadness we can't see

We take the people of all the world

Into our hearts and grieve along

With their mourning woeful song

And darkened skies of Christmas lights

With human maladies and plights

Not every child is driven with greed

A few can see the pressing need

For better thoughts at times like these

To spread a joy and hearts appease

Remember the name of one small flower

"Heartease," (viola tricolour-thought)

That such a tiny thing could make

The world a better place to wait

In wonder at its many faces

The globe of blue has many graces

"Pansy"(pensée) is its other name

"Day and night" the Northern's claim

"Step-mother" too, strange names for you

Purple-blue defying grasses

Face held high to see the sky

Yes small wonders do us soothe

In the darkness of the month

That holds the "Christmas rose" ( or "Hellibore")

That growing in the English garden

Smiles at the moon as white as she

In Winters darkness happily

Reflecting light from earth to sky

Peace and good will, why not why?

That every man could hope to see

In this the twenty first century.

Ann,

may I call you Ann of Norway? it has such a poetic and royal ring to it. I can't believe that no one has commented on this piece yet... as I find it very good! the title leads us into a dark place but then a ray of light appears in the shape of a flower to gently lead us out of the poem. I love it when writers choose subjects which are usually kept very light (like christmas in this case) and transcribe them in a dark and heavy way. that is why I especially like the beginning of this one. respectfully, your Proprietress

Ann of Norway

Dear Proprietress (I have to keep spelling that name out slowly to get the letters in their rightful places) "Ann of green gables" Anne of Cleaves, there are as you say many who evoke names far more celebrated than little me, I wanted to have an email (justann@ etc) but there was a firm with the same name and I didn't want letters to them coming to me. I set the email up in the UK so its there the address is too. I was over to Wordsworth's cottage in the lake district of England, to hear a talk about his family by the son of Mervyn Peake, Sebastian Peake and that is a whole story in itself. I went back to England and Scotland to visit school and college friends from long ago, it was an eventful holiday lasting over a month and i may be writing about just that. There were Fairy Godmother's and Canadian government rep. for the Native Americans and Wine tasting experts and children with their wonderfully absurd humour which i join in with and all...now I must stop as this was only to say that I would be honoured and pleased to be named Ann of Norway. Dear you Love Ann
