Rickover's Dream

**Inspired by the song "Rickover's Dream" by the late Michael Hedges.  It's supposed to be about a tour on a nuclear sub when he was young, but I decided to make it a different dream, based on what I heard in the song. For those who have never heard the song, it's all acoustic fingerpicking style, and starts off with very light harmonics.  He comes in with heavy bass on the top string, and full on strum.  The rest of the song is pretty much slap harmonics, and in the middle he changes to an off key.  He finishes with heavy bass again on the top string, and back to light harmonics to finish the song. **

Night falls, and I drift
moon obscured by clouds
every so often, a star peers through.
Rain softly falls
with a great flash of lightning
the ghosts of the past
stand illuminated
and vanish
into a cloud of smoke

Pieces of me are torn off
and turned purple
spiraling upwards
onwards
into the clouds
Flashing around me
thunder deafening
The ghosts return
and together we fall
with the rain.....

haunting yet picturesque

That was a nice short poem. Imagery was great creating both a haunting yet a picturesque atmosphere and it flowed beautifully.

I love this

You made me forget I was sitting in my office in front of a computer screen. That's the kind of poetry I love. I get the impression that this should maybe be read while listening to Rickover's Dream, so I think I shall try it. I have a couple of pieces of my own like that too. Thanks, everyone!

Jim is correct, the poem makes better sense when the song Rickover's Dream is listened to. My description does it no justice whatsoever. I'm pleased that it was enjoyed by some, as upon rereading, I felt it was a weak piece.
