A Message To A Tyrant.

Sowing flowers will adorn
Your home and your street.
Sow flowers; don't sow thorns.
They will prick your own feet.

How you look at every one
With your eyes full of greed.
You forget that you will, too,
One day ride Death's Steed.

When you shoot arrows at others
Don't forget to realize,
That the same arrows will come
Back to pierce your eyes.

Dig not a well in another's path
Lest you come to the edge yourself.
Human beings are all one body;
Who hurts another, hurts himself.

On a highland sow not,
Farmers, to farm a crop.
Seek lowliness, o friend,
If you want to reach the top.

Reconsider your path
Now that your day is bright.
Lo, lest this shining day
Turn into a black night.

The heart, which like a ship,
Carries every body's load,
Never faces any storm
And goes safe to God's abode.

English version of a Pashto poem, "Sow Flowers", of Pashtun poet, "Rahman Baba"(1650--1715 A.D), famous for "Sufism", God's Love and the love of Humanity. He is the most revered and loved poet in Pashtun society, both in Pakistan and Afghanistan. I tried to translate this poem in English, hope it will be appreciated. This poem, "Sow Flowers", is one of the most famous poems of Rahman Baba. It is memorized by almost every Pashtun. I titled it "A Message To A Tyrant", because it has a nice message for the tyrants.

Beautiful-

And thanks for the cultural information. I've made some suggestions, mostly regarding punctuation. They are in (), empty () indicate I removed something. I wonder if you know the Prayer of St. Francis, which I had to memorize in my youth. SOW FLOWERS() Your home and your street(.) Sow flowers(;) don’t sow thorn(s.) (They) will prick your own feet. You forget that you will(,) too, When you shoot (an) arrow at others(,) Don’t forget to realize() Dig not well in another’s path (? Hmm, not quite sure about the meaning here - is it like, "Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones"?) Lest you come to the edge yourself(.) Human beings are all one body(;) Sow() not on highland, Any farmer to get crop. (maybe - To farm a crop) () (S)eek lowliness(,) o friend(,) If you want to reach the top. The heart, which like a ship(,)

Well done Wafi

I really liked how this was written and the message involved. Great poem and great translation. Over here there is a saying..."Everything is on the wheel; what goes around will come around." Totally enjoyed this. Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water."

To Wafi

As a believer in karma this poem rings true.I know I have been guilty of judging to quickly or throwing blame to hide my own.I think the choices we make are like bricks on our life's path.So we can only blame ourselves when our path gets a little rocky or has holes in it and we fall down into them.I loved the title.Thank you for sharing such a thought provoking poem.Best Wishes Your Friend Mysticalpoetlady (Angie)

Sorry I missed this, I really enjoyed the message, it was great. If I may add, Its good to get this out in the open, it makes people feel better. In the bible it says not to waste time talking to the foolish. People are either on the right side or the wrong. They either hurt people or are hurt. Anyway, I enjoyed reading this one. Hello Wafi,

you did an excellent job translating this wise and timeless poem. I can see why Pashtun society has revered Baba's work for centuries. Very Karmic, and sage, something that all cultures can and should adhere to. Thank you for giving us this gem, if there's one thing that neopoet can provide us with is a window into ALL of God's creation here on Earth. Mark W. Galatians 5:22-23 "22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against these, there is no law!" My favorite verse(s) in the Bible

Enjoy their poetic exspression

Dig not well in another’s path................did you mean a well? Lo, lest this shinning day......................did you mean shining? Otherwise a good translation, yes those sages of the past had found something precious for the modern man to take heed of and for us to enjoy in their peoetic way of expressing themselves. Yours Ann of Norway with thanks that you mentioned this place Wafi.

Aesthete's life?

Its rather fun to be called wise, I am not sure that I am always so but thank you for the compliment. I do my best in my own way, which is often unconventional, mais tant pis! I am most certainly not as wise as those philosophers you mention here, I suppose we should wish to be as wise as they, but somehow ones own mistakes can lead one to other wonderful happenings by chance, where the ordered life of an aesthete will never offer such experiences! What do you think Wafi? Yours Ann of Norway

You Are Right My Friend.

You are right my friend, our own life is full of strange mysteries. It teaches us great things, our mistakes, our own experiences have its own place in our life, I have felt that all the things happened to others in the past and the lessons which are for us in those happenings, seem not that important as compared with the things which happened to us in our own lives. For me it is very difficult to believe in things about which I dont have any personal experience or thought, but still the lives of the great phillosophers and thinkers is an example to choose a direction in life. Thanks for taking the time for sharing your views with me, my sweet Ann of Norway. I enjoy your company a lot. Sincerely, Wafi
