Elegy for the people of Israel and Palestine

Eli, Eli, lama sh´lo yegamer leolam?

Once, my tears fell onto the ground of Yad Vashem

I was crying for the shoa

in the bitter knowledge that it was my people

who inflicted this upon you

This morning, my tears soaked the newspaper

I was crying for the war

in utter disbelief that a people once persecuted

can inflict this upon another

In my Hebrew books, I found the word for revenge

it is the second next to peace

three little dots make all the difference

from hope to devastation

My God, my God, why may it never stop?

my dear friend,

so very from the heart... I felt this piece in my soul. it is not easy to write of such a delicate subject. you mastered it. I feel this is one of your best. one thing: could you translate the question for me? may my little dragon hop safely from this year to the next! your Proprietress

my sweet muse,

the question is translated in the last line. The original line is from an elegy in Hebrew, I only added the "why". May your New Year bring you only pleasant surprises, unlike the old one, Ink

Little Dragon

As your Ink has turned to the tear drops for a people that are being held in a permanant conflict, it seems that the world is powerless to say to them, Stop this stupidity. The tears will flow on and on little one as long as they dont join the human race first then their own beliefs after. I hear the children of both places scream out why, and the sad parents just shake their heads and say, what does why mean. I will not say, I hope for a better time for them, as I find that Hope is a negative word. If all you have left is hope then you are sat on your bum waiting for something to cure someting. It is time the world said DO This. Anyway you have a great new year and look to your inner self and have fun, Yours Ian.T

Thank you Ian,

it is my firm belief that we should not let our faith or culture separate us, but instead make us approach each other respectfully. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is something that is always on my mind, and I sincerely wish to live to see it end. My best wishes for 2009 go out to you, Ink

Dear Ink, I am active in my Middle East Peace Forum... begun by Dennis Kucinich, former US Presidential Candidate and former Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. So many folks world over are getting involved. In its complexity, war will always erupt as long as *sides* are taken... and peace is as simple as *I will fight no more forever*. Thank you for this poem. ~A "All in all, it's just another brick in the wall." Pink Floyd There are no walls except for the ones we build. ~me~

Anna,

it is wonderful that you are trying to do something about this. In my own humble ways, I´m trying, too. I have met both Israelis and Palestinians and have talked to them at length about this subject. I have found many people on both sides who want the conflict to end, but I have also found some who are very prejudiced against the other side... If we could only find a way to make the extremists on both sides see reason... My best wishes for 2009 for you and your forum, Ink

That’s the thing,

That's the thing, *extremists from both sides* IS the reason for the continuation.. The ones who are moderates and the peace makers have to be strong enough to withstand the extremists on either side.... and come to a truce...and the truth HAS to be told. Israel can not occupy an another country in order to protect its own borders and create a modern-day Warsaw Ghetto for Palestinians. Whether that will stop Palestinian extremists is probably *no*; some folks will kill with conviction to have their agendas pushed down the throats of the world. ~A "All in all, it's just another brick in the wall." Ink thanks alot for sharing this poem... I really appreciate your thoughts and hope all these miseries end.I know we cant stop it but atleast we can have our say against bruatality.. It greives me so much when I see such things, and the silence and carelessness of the those make me more sad and pissed off who can help stop it. You speak my thoughts! Best wishes, Wafi

Wafi,

I see that you´re from Pakistan, so you´re in the middle of all this, so to speak. My heart goes out to you and your family, and I wish for a peaceful year 2009 (and many more to come) for your country! Respectfully, Ink

There will always be suffering masses..until and unless folks everywhere say *WE* and not *us* and *them*. ~A "All in all, it's just another brick in the wall." Pink Floyd There are no walls except for the ones we build. ~me~

Excellent poem

about a crucial subject. Tomorrow I shall be posting a poem about the inability of our present leaders (due to their inadequate education for such a task) to deal with this kind of conflict, and the need for citizens all over the world to take a hand in promoting understanding between those of different races and/or religions (in the way Kailashana appears to be doing already). The news about the bombing of the Gaza strip is very depressing, though I sometimes wonder why a minority of extremist Palestinians go on firing rockets into Israel if they know (as they surely must) that Israeli fire-power is far superior. Best Wishes, Robert. P.S. I could not find 'shoa' in my dictionary. Please explain if you have a moment.

Robert,

shoa is Hebrew for "catastrophe" and it is the word used by Israelis and Jews in general for the holocaust in Germany during Hitler´s regime. Greetings, I´m looking forward to your poem, Ink

For the opening line, did you mean "Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachthani?" - meaning " my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Good, powerful write. And as you've mentioned, it's a thin line between good and evil. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- - "If we always give what we have always given, we will always get what we have always got..." - Mike R.

Thanks, Jess,

the line you quote is the one Jesus is supposed to have said in the garden of Ghetsemaneh, before he was being arrested, isn´t it? I was not aiming at this one, the line "Eli, eli sh`lo yegamer leolam" is from an elegy in Hebrew and translates "My God, my God, may it never stop", so I just threw the "lama"(why) in. Thanks for reading, Ink

Actually, Jesus uttered that while on the cross shortly before he "died" The war in the middle east saddens us all. WE must pray for peace. As for your Hebrew being rusty, I would never know. I admire anyone who is bilingual. Heartfelt write. Sincerely, Linda

I have several Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Wiccan and Atheist friends. All are agreed there should be an end to this and yet you talk deeper and some of them resent the bombings, some resent the safety measures because of the bombings and wish there could be something done. All of them agree on one thing though. If one side stops, there will still be those on the other that will continue and thus they are caught in a violence begets violence begets violence loop. It is sad because all my friends want peace and find there is not so much differences between us. Heartwrenching poem and very well written. Thank you for sharing. I have to give it 5/5. Sorry to butt in but after reading your comment I sense you might be interested in A Formula for Peace - a poem on a closely related subject - which I'll be posting as soon as the one day rule allows, Best Wishes, Robert

Rett, thank you,

while I am glad of a 5/5 rating, what means even more to me is that you are sharing your opinion about this conflict here, which seems to be an opinion along the same lines like mine. Thanks, Ink

Eddie,

I am awed with all the great comments I am getting, this gives me hope that Gaza is not only on my own mind, maybe there will be peace after all if so many people are thinking the same about it. It is my sincere wish that this will happen soon. Thank you, ID

Congrats on a much deserved spotlight! I stand corrected with my previous comment - you are correct with the timeframe, and I was wrong with what I thought you meant. I apologize. Ink...

the other day as I was watching the news, I too was devastated to hear about Israel dropping bombs... I don't pretend to know all of the facts... but I do know it has gone on long enough... There are innocent people under fire from both sides... their crime is the crime of location, of which most were born there... not much of a crime huh... I like your poem and it is a subject matter that needs the attention of writers and the world... Richard

Who rated this poem "poor"?

I don´t have a problem if you don´t like it, but I hate stealth! Say openly what you have to say, or were you just after getting me out of the spotlight? Laughing in your face, as if spotlight was important to me of all people, Ink Dragon

Ink, I am of the opinion

That the people who do that are basically cowards who like to cause trouble thus they vote bad but are too cowardly to comment on why they did it. It is kind of like the extremist terrorist that thinks killing innocent men, women and children makes them big people. Respectfully, Rett: "When all is said and done, Shut up and relax!" Rett

I too, have noticed this….

I too, have noticed this.... the numbers are 5's and then someone decides the numbers are too high and..... Sad... even here... in a community of kindred spirits. I never vote, for that reason... even though I notice the votes, as it were. I have been moderated and banned from poetry sites, have been mocked and ridiculed, have been praised and loved... In the end, it's my own heart that bears *witness* and it's never *false*. Much Love. ~Anna "All in all, it's just another brick in the wall." That´s it, Anna,

it´s sad and it´s annoying to those who want the truth about their poems, like me. Just giving it 1 star is not saying the truth!!! Thanks, Anna, Ink
