Three Orifices

I apologize very openly
for our trying to police the World.
Our government did a disservice
way before the bombs were hurled;

but, I also have to recognize
without drinking from this "cup",
that Americans didn't invent this war,
'twas our leaders, who made it up.

This is the first time in history
three orifices made things "tick",
for we've been genuinely ruled
by a "Colin", a "bush", and a "dick"!

I'm not making light of things,
perspective is my goal.
But, trying to keep a sense of humor
has taken quite a toll.

I know, they don't think it's funny
because they sure are shooting back,
our leaders aught to get a clue,
the way we're always under attack!

The bottom line, so much has been done
when shove comes down to push;
three orif ices have ran our country,
and I mean, a "Colin", a "dick", and a "bush"!

Politicians

Political leaders are generally stubborn and power-mad and therefore unable to reach a fair agreement sometimes. The result is war, but they don't usually fight themselves or send their sons or daughters to be shot at. I have read a number of poems about the First World War recently, written by young poets who are still amazed by how terrible it was. I believe more soldiers were lost then than in the Second World War, though I guess more civilians died in the latter (in bombed cities, concentration camps and so on). I agree with all anti-war poems, even if they contain a touch of humour like yours. Best Wishes, Robert.

Robert...

....riddle me this, but tell me no lies; does the fact that, I used humor detract, or lesson the message of the poem? I really need to know, because I really wasn't going for "sarcastic"....yet, I DID think I had a definite "angle". If you've got the time, please let me know...because, I don't want my message to have been as hollow as your remark. Maybe, it's just another case of..."too little.....too late." Why don't you tell me. Don't get me wrong, I sincerely cherish, the comments that "spring" forth, from your fingers. I have no "feedback", EXECPT for this site, so, I "dangle" from the threads that are yours. This is a lonely country for writers, as of late. Maybe, I should "hone" better, whatever I want to say, Politically.....or, shut my mouth. Nes Pa? # ....I wasn't only going for a sort of sarcasm...but, there's definately humor present. Please, let me know what you think in that regard. Thanx, You're the man to go to, for the "truth"... ....so there it is, #{:>{)* docmaverick.

Hi docmaverick

I have re-read your poem and I realize now that your main angle is humorous. I suppose I interpreted it mainly as a condemnation of war because you seem to be saying that the people who put America into the role of policing the world are all idiots, so it sounded as if you were unhappy with the war in Iraq, for example. I may have missed some of the word-plays, such as a 'colin', so I'll use my Webster's dictionary on that one. I've heard of Colin Powell but not of the other possible meaning. I think I understood 'bush' and 'dick' pretty clearly though. I suppose there is a big element of politics here which I am not catching too well because I don't take much interest in the rivalry between political parties, either here or in the U.S. ... Best Wishes, Robert.

Humour about international conflict

On second (or perhaps third) thoughts, I think the reason I wrote 'even if they contain a touch of humour' is that I'm so used to serious or even tragic poetry about international conflicts that it's a little strange to come across a funny piece which appears to implicitly include that theme. Perhaps it is a little risky to treat such a topic lightly, even if it is not the main subject of your poem, but I think you get away with it. Best wishes again, Robert.

Three Orifices...

..was a "joke", that I made up; and I WAS speaking of "Colin" Powell, "Dick" Cheney, and of course, George "Bush".....thus, 3 orifices. I guess I could've called 'em 3 ass-holes, but it didn't seem "clever", enough. As for the structured, classic, rhyming style...I merely found it to add "whimsey". I could've been wrong. I've been wrong twice, before.....after all, I'm twice divorced. l.o.l. #{:>{) Thanks for the "terciary" comments, Oh! And "elf"! Where've you been? docmaverick.

been beaten down a bit by the "nice" people

wish some of my ex-protegees or anyone would take up the flag and really criticise bad poetry and content. I don't have the strength to be the only honest critic on the site. I would like some support. cheers, Jess "A poet's work: to name the unnameable, to point at frauds, to take sides, start arguments, shape the world and stop it going to sleep." Salman Rushdie

barbara, no one stays out of politics

"staying out" is a way of saying "whatever you do is ok". Do you really believe what politicians do is ok? cheers, Jess "A poet's work: to name the unnameable, to point at frauds, to take sides, start arguments, shape the world and stop it going to sleep." Salman Rushdie

Jess

I stay out of politics as far as I don't argue the point or vote them in. I can see the corruption just like everybody and is affected by it and is suffering through it like the rest. I put my hopes in God heavenly kingdom which will rule in righteousness in his appointed time. This is my belief and was not meant to be push on any anybody who will disagree including you my Friend. *XOXO* Respectfully Yours, Barbara
