Above all, Father, save me
from filling the froth
on some twenty-nothing's Latte:
steaming hot about
"Trouble in Tibet"
while a real bubble bursts
in a jaundiced man's heart
a few blocks downtown.

Hmmm . . .

I've mixed feelings about this poem. I can't quibble about the writing, which is very good. But, someone must be hot about Tibet. It seems to me the bigger issue is those who chat about ills vs. those who "do" about them, wherever they are. Then there is the issue of a prayer to not be like the Father's other, less-worthy-in-the-speaker's-eyes, children. It reminds me of a C.S. Lewis meditation about how we are all the bane of someone else. All that said, I agree we have a responsibility to our local community needy and think you said it effectively.

100,000 dead in Asia=

10,000 dead in your homeland= 100 dead in your city= 10 dead in your street= 1 dead in your family. No, I don't believe it either. I see here the 20 nothing pontificating over latte, and shudder. cheers, Jess "Who are you writing for?"
