If We're Gonna Do This

So if we're gonna do this

Let's do this for good

There's a way we want to do it

And then there's the way we should

If we keep holding out

We're gonna keep holding on

Trying to keep something going

Just gonna make it gone

So I'll keep stirring up my coffee

And not stare you in the face

And when the waitress comes over

Small talk about this place

So if we're gonna do this

If we're gonna sleep alone

No surprise notes on the windshield

No late night texts on the phone

My friend Devin in Chicago

Dated a girl for a year

And when they split up

She said, 'your ex was always here'

And he said, 'I don't get it,'

And she said, 'Yes you do,'

Devin finally got it

And I think I get it to

Waitress lays the bill down

We agree to split it up

You go to front to pay it

Busboy takes my empty cup

Put on my coat and snow hat

Walk you over to your car

We hug and then you drive off

So we did this after all.

interesting write

I liked the your ex was always here. Ran into many like that. I enjoyed the read although it seems like you may have forced a rhyme or two. In stanza two it sounds forced and then in the last stanza you didn't rhyme which actually detracted from the form you were following. Other than that a good write. Thanks Rett

This poem was very Bright Eyes influenced. I actually wrote chords out but didn't put them on here ... I appreciate the feedback. The last line was not 'rhymed' on purpose; it's an intentional forced rhyme. Kind of like, we're going separate ways so the pattern is off. The second and second to last stanza's have a rhyme structure of building on a word instead of a true rhyme. My way to symbolize dependency. I really like your feedback. This is the second poem of mine you've written a helpful response to ... please keep on doing so. We're in this together, brother. -George Ian
