The Homecoming

This homecoming of our children,
young men and women who we miss,
although we give them freedom;
this family moment of returning youth -
brown with summer from the south,
full of stories, carefree -
this scene is precious, gemlike,
but for a presence in my memory
which whispers out its background lines:
"If I were still alive today,
I, too, would love such times."

Robert, I like this

The last 5 verses really brought it "home" to me. Wonderful write.Ahhh, if I were alive today... I can hear my mama saying that in my mind... Respectfully, Rett: "Each man is good in the sight of the Great Spirit.." (Sitting Bull)

Hi Rett

Thanks for your positive reaction. Good times are a little sad when someone you once loved is no longer around to share them. I'm afraid this feeling is common at Christmas time, at least for those of us who are past fifty. Life is like rugby, you keep getting knocked down but you just have to get up and carry on. (That's my favourite saying - because I think I said it first...) Best Wishes, Robert.
