Festive Poem Soup

(From the literary critic`s cook book)

¼ cup nouns

¼ cup chopped adjectives

¼ cup all purpose adverbs

1 can verb broth

1 can evaporated pronouns

2 large or 3 medium metaphors

rhyme and
ground alliteration to taste

4 strips similes, cooked and crumbled

½ cup shredded parallelism

3 tablespoons sliced oxymorons

  1. Melt nouns in large saucepan over medium heat. Add adjectives, cook, stirring occasionally, for 1 to 2 minutes or until tender. Stir in adverbs. Gradually stir in verb broth and evaporated pronouns.
  2. Scoop metaphor pulp from one metaphor, mash. Add pulp to word broth mixture. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture just comes to a boil.
  3. Dice remaining metaphor skin and metaphors, add to poem soup. Heat through. Season with rhyme and alliteration.
  4. Top each serving with simile, parallelism and oxymoron.

Makes 4 servings.

Variation: For a different twist to this recipe omit the simile, parallelism and oxymoron. Cook 2 tablespoons of shredded paradoxon with the adjectives and add ¼ teaspoon of dried irony to the poem soup. Proceed as above.

Hi there

How I wish poems could be written by following a recipe like this! It would be so much quicker and the result would be perfect every time. Great fun! Best Wishes, Robert.

Dear Robert,

Glad you had fun reading this, it was fun to write it, too. I´m afraid there´s no "recipe" for poems, we all must rely on our gut feelings when writing... Have great holidays, Ink

As it happens,

the original recipe did say something about cheese there, but I think it was Cheddar cheese. Glad you liked it, Ink

Thank you, Ronda,

it was triggered by Jess´ forum "un-educated in poetry", which got me thinking about whether or not you need to know all the clever words and if they would make you a better poet... Ink

thoroughly enjoyed this,

plan to experiment with some of those ingedients. Just for fun I like to add a pinch or two of nonsense to my stew. cheers, Jess "A poet's work: to name the unnameable, to point at frauds, to take sides, start arguments, shape the world and stop it going to sleep." Salman Rushdie

Jess,

the way I read your pieces, you only include nonsense that you have observed...Our world is full of nonsense, and you are one of the people who constantly remind me of that... So, keep that nonsense coming, Ink

Well, Dragon,

I can see that when you beat your wings to express your passion and vitality someone someitmes tickles you under your arms! This is thoughtful, celebratory, and, as is your nature, a warm invitation to the table for all! And...no matter how many times you prepare this recipe, and no matter how many cooks and poets serve it, each time it will be new and different. Please let me know what wine to bring to the feast. I throughly enjoyed this. Thanks for the tip to look for it! Thank you. Michael
