The Elfin Princess

To my beautiful daughter

Glitter and gold surround you halolike
And when I glimpse you in the crown of a tree
my heart flies up to meet you

You must be an Elfin princess
accidently born into our world

You expect the trees to speak to you
the wells to sing out to you
because Elvenhome's magic
is woven into your very matter

How distraght must you feel in our prosaic Middle Earth

If your daughter is the person in the crown of a tree, it sounds a little dangerous. Perhaps you should call her down! Apart from that I LOVE this poem (my daughters were princesses once - in fact they still are (for me, and I hope for their partners) although they're in their twenties. Best Wishes, Robert.

Thank you for your concern, Robert,

but my daughter is quite safe at any height, and has been so from the age of 10 months, when she first climbed a chair. (Unlike me, I am awfully afraid of heights) On the day I wrote this poem, she was wearing her newest skirt, an affair in flowers and glitter, and I could not get the picture out of my head... Glad you liked it, ID

green eyes,

glad to see you can relate to this piece. I sometimes feel sorry for my own children for having delivered them into this world so full of pain... but our world has beauty to offer, too... I hope they will always be able to see this beauty. Yours, ~Nina

This is such a sweet poem and one can tell that you are very proud of your daughter. All little girls are princesses and should be treated as such. With love and respect. one thing: should the word halolike be halo-like? Always, Cat

Cat,

thanks for dropping by and taking the time to read this piece closely. I tend to shun hyphens and often simply treat words that should be hyphenated as one long word (poetic license thing all over again). But thanks for being vigilant! Yours, ~Nina
