This love wins through

Despite the nagging drone of modern life -
its pointless haste and competition;
despite depression, with its consequent
domestic strain and arguments -
this love survives.

Shrugging off the ghastly news that glares
from screens or from the papers,
and rising over rending tragedies
of relatives or friends who died too soon -
this love wins through.

Against all odds, this stubborn love fights on,
and warms cold night,
and lights grey dawn.

love the work

hate the first line. It's just so... obvious? Perhaps you could make it more personal? Just a thought. cheers, Jess "They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety" Benjamin Franklin, wonder what he would think of the Patriot Act.

Hi Weirdelf,

Despite being obvious, I think this line is true. Modern life is stressful. and it nags at our individuality like a bad-tempered woman (I'm afraid my mother was a bit that way, although she also had a remarkable ability to appreciate the beauty of nature). I shall try to make it more personal, nevertheless, but I need time. I have already changed one word. You may hate the first line, but what about the rest of the poem? Best wishes, Robert.

Sorry,

Sorry, I didn't see the title of your comment ('love the work'). I'm glad it's only one line I have to worry about... Best wishes, Robert. P.S. I hope you'll agree that the donkey photo is appropriate for a poem about 'stubborn love'.

hey my mum is formidable too

yes, just that line bothered me, and as always on this site, take the best and leave the rest. I am never offended by people not taking my suggestions, I'm just like Zaphod Beeblebrok, just this guy, you know? Also an opinionated areshole, but we need critics. cheers, Jess "They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety" Benjamin Franklin, wonder what he would think of the Patriot Act.

Hi again,

I have changed 'stress' to 'drone' in the first line because 'stress' is perhaps an over-used word and 'drone' may conjure up the sound of traffic as well as the idea of mindless work (like male bees). Hope that improves the line for you. If not, please feel free to contact me. Thanks for your comments. Best wishes, Robert.

Improves it immeasurably in my opinion,

glad it worked for you. But of course you are the final arbiter, it has to work for you. cheers, Jess "They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety" Benjamin Franklin, wonder what he would think of the Patriot Act.
