English Breakfast

I’m not a morning person

This will come as no surprise

Until I’ve had a cup of tea

I can barely open eyes

What I need each morning

That will get me on my way

A good hot cuppa, strong and sweet

To help kickstart the day

Not for me that fancy stuff

No Earl Grey or Darjeeling

It’s English Breakfast every time

That gets my senses reeling

The first cup gets me moving

Gets me washed and dressed

The second one I savour

For me that cups the best

Never offer me a coffee

I don’t care how its made

My cup of English Breakfast

Puts coffee in the shade

Now you may think that I’m fussy

You may think that I am not

But my early morning cuppa

Will always hit the spot

Mmmm!

Earl Grey is a really really good tea. I don't recall ever trying English Breakfast tea, though... guess I should! I've noticed that I've been getting away from the coffee, and when I do have a cup, I'm particular and fussy on how it's made. Entertaining write, John! ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- - "Does Rudolph fail the safety inspection if his nose is burnt out? And where does he go? I don't think he'd fit in the bay at the Jiffy Lube." Happy holidays, y'all!

Earl Greys ok with lemon but

Earl Greys ok with lemon but English breakfast with milk and two sugars is the ducks. The only time I ever drink coffee is when I go to Greece, they seem to have the knack of making it just the way I like it, unfortunately the coffee I make is absolute rubbish. Thanks for reading Jess. John

Hi there,

In Spain (where I live) people are always complaining about watery English coffee. I tell them they should drink tea when they go to England and I feel tempted to add that Spanish tea is terrible. In my experience tea is lighter on the stomach than coffee. Your poem has made me want to brew a 'cuppa' right now! (By the way, I'm never sure how long I should leave it brewing - and I'm English!) Best wishes, Robert.

Robert, you’re dead right

Robert, you're dead right about Spanish tea (usually Twinings I believe) you should get some proper stuff and show them what a good cuppa really tastes like. As for making a decent cup of tea, remember, practice makes perfect and you can never have too much of a good thing, so get the kettle on. Regards John

Get a tapered two foot-tall

Get a tapered two foot-tall dark-and-light-blue enameled pot, add three handfulls of good course ground coffee, fetch clear water from the spring and fill to brim, set to simmer over birch or maple on the back of a well-seasoned cast-iron stove and share with friends as they come - some of us add more spring water and coffee at need until grounds get to a short thumb or so from the pot's rim - then dump, rinse and start again. Lumberjack coffee... Coffee for the season... That's how we tell who our friends are here in the woods of Maine. (We also walk along downed pine trees barefoot and kick the knots off with our toes.) VP (this has the makings of a poen of sorts doesn't it? stay tuned)

Sadly the best we could

Sadly the best we could muster here would be a muddy stream, not ideal for making coffee with. It certainly sounds like a beautiful place and I think a poem extolling its beauty is definately in order. Regards John
