In Spite Of It All

"Mommy" I would say, "I have no
Clothes to wear to school today
"That's your fault" she would say
"You shoud have laid your clothes
Out last night

"But Mommy, I have no clean clothes
to lay out. What should I do
"Don't bother me" she would say as
She impatiently stomped her foot
"Why do you always have to cause trouble

So that morning, already late for school
I crawled under the bed and found my
Brothers' dirty striped shirt to wear
Put on socks with holes in the heels
And a little pair of scuffed shoes

My brothers' striped shirt, and an old
flowered skirt
My hair uncombed, and no bath
This is the way I went to school most
Of the time.  I was only seven years old

I had no friends and the teacher looked at
Me with distain.  No one ever thought to help
I tried to be invisible and hoped that nothing
Would be said
In the classroom, I never knew the right answer

On the playground I stood alone
Leaning up against the wall
Trying to act as if I did not care
No one to talk to, and not invited
To play with the other kids

I began to live in my head and
Imagine that I was someone wonderful
It was my secret place to go
I lived in a world of books and dreams
And imagination

A loner for sure, with secrets to hide
Abused by my father, and ignored by my mother
Just a little girl, and so all alone
Nothing but a throw away child
But I fooled them all

I grew up well in spite of it all
What should have defeated me
Only served to make me stronger
The dreams, the books and my imagination
Have served me well

And in spite of it all, I loved you Mom

Childhood

If this is true, it sounds as if you missed out on what should be one of the happiest, most carefree periods in our lives (before we have to start worrying about bills and taxes). I once heard a Spanish poet define happiness as memories of a good childhood. But your imagination seems to have pulled you through. This poem is full of poignant details. Best wishes, Robert.

A sad story. The fact that you were able to forgive your mother through all that is astounding. You're right, you are a strong person! ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- - "Does Rudolph fail the safety inspection if his nose is burnt out? And where does he go? I don't think he'd fit in the bay at the Jiffy Lube." Happy holidays, y'all!

So very much of this

I can relate to, especially the father part. I find I am at a loss for words my friend. Me, a poet at a loss for words... ((HUGS)) We got through it didn't we? first word, second stanza..buy=but. Respectfully, Rett: "Each man is good in the sight of the Great Spirit.." (Sitting Bull)

reflecting.

I have to compliment you on this glance over your shoulder, reflecting about our past is never an easy thing. and you seem to have had some hard times, so it gets that much harder... my respect goes out to you for growing "up well in spite of it all". I like the way you slowly build the topic, pick up the pace and conclude with a jump into the present. really, Linda, a wonderful poem.

Childhood "should" be so care free...I think more often than not that the opposite is the truth. What does not kill us only makes us stronger. Thank you for sharing. Sincerely; Debbie

The what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger, is my motto on my profile here at neopoet. I used to keep a little sign on my desk that said the same. Thank you for reading and commenting. The other saying I like is "He who conquers self has won a great battle" Still working on that one. Sincerely, Linda
