Haunted (part 3 in a series of 4 poems)
“You reached into your glowing scars:
`This rose will be my gift for you.´
and you handed me a drop of blood.”
(Rainer Maria Rilke, Ave)
He approached me with presents
words of love teetering on his lips
How could he even dare?
His words were dripping onto my brow
like Chinese drops of water
I almost choked
on the bitter taste of his apologies
As if …
His words were obstructing my mouth
like a foul-smelling gag
A familiar darkness
expectantly raised its head
sniffing the sultry air for opportunities
A hateful sprite was loitering in the corner of my eye
I nearly failed to recognize it
It was my love
defaced and half decayed
that had come back to haunt me
I should have looked
for consecrated earth
and, for good measure
driven a stake through its heart
