The exorcism (part 4 in a series of 4 poems)

"Everything in life is organized around people falling in love with each other.
Falling is easy; but no one tells you how to fall out of love."
(Hanif Kureishi, "The Buddha of Suburbia")

The white witch had told her how to do it
she was armed with a piece of string, a pair of scissors
and an incantation learnt by heart

Hereby I undo the knot that ties us

but her foolish lips would not part

She turned to her oldest friend
a scrap of pristine paper
in her spidery scrawl, she wrote

You have killed my love for you

but her stupid hand was clutching the note too tightly

She did not dare look at him
much less even speak to him
she just slipped it into his outstretched hand

I declare myself liberated from this bond

but her stubborn heart was still beating in her throat

All that was left in her palm was a ragged piece of string
all that was left for her to do was to destroy it

By fire, water, earth and air

she finally drove the evil spirit away

Thank you

for the "wow". I would appreciate it if you read the rest as well. I have been writing about a chapter of my life I once thought I would never dare to look at again. Regards, ID

What great closure!

this is a great closure piece that ties the whole story together well. you have captured what many go through - you reherse over and over in your mind what needs to be done or said - nail to a "t" but when the reality comes to be, it never goes as rehersed in your mind. i've done it several times myself. well done. Live, Laugh and Love (and don't forget to write) Tink

Break the spell

by casting one of your own. I love the mystical incantation and the power of confidence here, Ink. Most of all, I am happy that you have broken the bonds that held you back and kept you from flying. You cut a beautiful image across the sky, my dear friend. love, ~ Ronda

Ronda, can you imagine a dragon on skates?

I was skating yesterday, and as I cannot actually fly, at least not with my body, I imagine ice-skating is the closest I will ever get to flying... Those bonds were awfully hard to break, because I really used to love him, that was the hard part. Thanks for following this little series, my friend, Ink

Dear Anna and dear magics,

I debated putting all the poems together, but feel that they are like - chapters, perhaps? - and really do not belong into one piece. Also, what I am relating in them is a complicated - convoluted? - story that took place over several years. I am incredibly - unreasonably? - reluctant to shape them into one giant piece. (It doesn't feel right at this point, somehow.) Maybe one day I will, and I do thank you both for your suggestion. Yours, ~Nina
