Was it for Nothing

Purple haze, broken by the
psychedelic colors of Sunshine,
dancing four ways to Sunday,

Crashing guitar of Jimmy Hendricks,
pumping sound of Iron butterfly,
is it “In-I-gada-the-vida” or
“In the garden of Eden”,

Running in and out of poetry readings
around the east village,

Awareness of war and fighting the
powers that be, marching and sit ins
a Columbia University,

The changes we fought for,
did we know it would be like this,
so many headaches and so few solutions,

Where is my America?
The one I grew up with?
I just can’t believe that all we said
and all we did,

 Was it for Nothing?
-------------------------------------------------------------

(Stanza one has three hallucinogenic
drugs of the 60’s which I had taken,
Purple Haze, Sunshine, and fourway.)

You said a mouthful here, great write Eddie! _____________________________ To write a touching poem, you must gently stir the soul, if it brings forth tears or smiles, then the story was beautifully told. ________Janice Pearce_________

Janice,

thank you so much! I tried to convey the feelings we had in the "60's", and what we did for the future. I not sure if I succeeded? Thanks, Eddie

Hi Eduardo,

This poem reminds me of my own feeble attempts at political protest back in the sixties. I'm afraid there seems to be an inertia in society and politics that makes it very hard to really change anything. Some people go on earning far too little while others earn far too much, unnecessary wars continue to break out every so often, etc. At least you and your buddies managed to stop the Vietnam war! By the way, the word 'null' sounds forced to me. I think it's usually an adjective. Why not put simply 'nothing'? Best wishes, Robert.

I think it's 'In a Gadda Da Vida' actually. One thing I never understood about the 60's and 70's - why did they think drugs needed to go hand-in-hand with the protesting? Music, concerts, and protests - great. Drugs and liberation of self to the point of danger - don't understand why or how that's beneficial. But what do I know? I wasn't even around for it. :~) ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- - "Does Rudolph fail the safety inspection if his nose is burnt out? And where does he go? I don't think he'd fit in the bay at the Jiffy Lube." Happy holidays, y'all!

Jess,

your right you were not there, the drugs had nothing to do with the protest. these drugs were created by brilliant minds in MIT, in government founded programs to created better soldiers, then young chemist created the designer drugs. It all happen at the same time period, but one had nothing to do with the other. The marches were for something we believed in, and the drugs were taken because it was something new! thanks buddy for your comment! Eddie

Today it´s the drugs without the protests

for most kids, I´m afraid. I desperately wish that I can make a difference, and haven´t given up hope yet. If people like us poets here ruled the world, what would it be like? Would we still see all the problems, or would we be doggedly pursuing our careers like most of the people in power? How corruptive is power? I have been thinking about those questions for some time now, and they sort of faded into the foreground again when I followed the recent U.S. elections. Thoughtful, ID

ID,

there is the difference, we did not let it fade away with the promises of Government. Yes election brings new hope, but only if we the people stay on point!! thanks, Eddie "being an American is not just having freedom, it's the ability to act on those Freedoms!! Keeping your elected leaders in check, by letting them know that we will hire someone else for the job."

I never took purple haze but I took a many a 4 way hit of Orange Sunshine.. Lat one resulted in a 47 hour bad trip I barely survived due to the fact it was laced with cyanide. That ended my tripping although I had flashbacks for a couple of years. I bought a kilo of weed once and manicured it and smoked it all. I spent almost a whole year stoned from the time I got up until I crashed. That was when it was a two year to life penalty in Texas. Iron Butterfly's song In A Godda Da Vida was supposed to be In a Garden of Eden but the lead singer came to recording studio so drunk and messed up he couldn't get it right so they just went with it. *LOL* Now as for the political statement, most of the people became warped and started thinking socialism was the way. We are fast becoming the USSA. All in all my friend, This was one helluva write. Brought back a lot of memories. Things we could have done, but like a poem I wrote, Tune in, turn on and drop out and it all went up in smoke. Respectfully, Rett: "I once had a handle on life, but it broke." Rett

Rett,

I guess that you and I are among the few who know that it was "In the Garden of Eden" when you listen to it in that vein then the lyrics make more sense. Yes, that's how it feels sometimes as if it all went up in smoke? I also broke the handle I thought I had on things! thanks, Sir Rett. Eddie

Did not do drugs, Momma told me not to come, and bye bye miss American pie really did drive the Chevy to the levee down in Virginia. Peace, I think we had impact. We stopped the draft, ended the war and lowered the drinking age to 18. Purple haze, Santana, Deep purple in Rock Alice Cooper, schools out forever. My favorite was country Joe and the Fish..... What are we fighting for, don't ask me I don't give a Damn, Next stop is Vietnam, Be the first one on the block to have your boy come home in a box. Those poor guys are still messed up, we taught them how to kill, but forgot to re-program them. Not enough money in the budget...... All the weed you wanted over there, agent orange................. I have heard stories to this day, I just heard another one. Thanks for bringing this up Eddie, it was not about the drugs..... The govt. started that experimenting on solders..... Remember Timothy Leary..... Peace, love, dope. Cool man..... Patty

Nice write

I did not do drugs. My friends and cousins I hang with since childhood did. They said I had do it to hang with them. I spent my last year high school wandering the campus alone. The rest is history. I Love them still today. Respectfully Yours, Barbara
