The Nine Muses (edit)

Euterpe

I awoke to the sound of music
and there she was

Her hands were the most beautiful
sincere but lovely were her eyes
her voice alluring like golden honey
as she declared
Enjoy my presence while you can
I will not stay

In a rush of harmonies
she was gone
and I felt a deep yearning
like an unrequited love
inflaming my soul

Melpomene

I perceived a soft crying
and there she was

Her tears were the brightest
serious and melancholy were her eyes
her voice lamenting like an autumnal storm
as she sighed
I claim you for my own
I only wish I did not have to

Hesitatingly
she caressed my chest

I never saw her leave
but I felt an unsettling certainty
like a heavy stone
taking root in my soul.

Polyhymnia

I overheard a humming
and when I strained my ears
there she was

Her voice was the most powerful
sensitive and radiant were her eyes
her unforgettable voice resounded like a clarion
as she sang
You are not my kind
I must not linger

With a last piercing note
she was gone
and I felt an enormous pain
like my heart was being ripped in two

Thalia

I heard a half-suppressed giggle
and there she was

Her laughter was the heartiest
mischievous and amused were her eyes
her voice happy like that of a lark
as she mouthed
You are mine
I will cure your heartache when you least expect it

Playfully
she stroked my mouth

I never saw her leave
but I felt an irrepressible urge
like an insatiable hunger
crack my lips into a grin

Urania

I noticed words spoken to me
and there she was

Her eyes were the sharpest and most intelligent
thorough was her attitude
her voice careful like that of a hunter on the trail
as she stated
I will not take you on
Your imagination makes you too careless for my art

In a swirl of dark mist
she was gone
and I felt an uplifting relief
like a butterfly´s wing
fluttering through my soul

Kalliope

I blinked at a sudden change of the twilight surrounding me
and there she was

Her brow was the most thoughtful
vivid and emotional were her eyes
her voice tender like rustling leaves
as she whispered
You are not entirely mine
but I will never be far from you

Ever so gently
she touched my forehead

I never saw her leave
but I felt a quiet longing
like a hollow space
spreading through my soul

and the strangest inkling of comfort to come

Erato
I felt something silky brush against my face
and there she was

Her black hair was the most luxurious
warm and sparkling were her eyes
her voice gentle like soft velvet
as she breathed
I will stay with you
you are so special

Tenderly
she kissed my cheek

I never saw her leave
but I felt an uncanny comfort
like a light embrace
all around me

Klio

I opened my eyes for the first time
and there she was

Her face was the most spiritual
prudent and unerring were her eyes
her voice crystal clear like moonlight
as she spoke
You are not for me
and I am not for you

In the batting of an eyelid
she was gone
and I felt a silent regret
like a breath of wind
echoing through my soul

Terpsichore

I glimpsed movement out of the corner of my eye
and there she was

Her body was the most artfully sculpted
focused and ecstatic were her eyes
her voice light like silver bells
as she chimed
I am not for you
and you are not for me

In a swirl of graceful motion
she was gone
and I felt a soft whisper
like silent crying
lingering in my soul

The Nine Muses

Pieces like these have always been among my favorites. Greek mythology and the like, anything magical and mystical. I think you conveyed the personalities of each muse quite well. The idea of them visiting the children and leaving them with varying responses is honest and leaves the mind to ponder all the other children visited by that particular muse. love ~ Ronda

Thank you, Ronda,

this poem was a piece of work, if ever I had one on my hands. I am glad it seems to have turned out well. Love, ID

Dalton to Ink Dragon

Your imagination is clearly not too careless for this art. it is a suite of nine beautiful poems in one. The only uncertainty is in the first stanza "her hands were the most beautiful" at first it seems an unfinished statement. but it continues in that flow throughout so forgive my presumption. A lovely read I thoroughly enjoyed it. A blessing for every muse. may you continue in this vein. Love and respects Dalton.

Hi Dalton,

I honestly did not think anyone could be bothered to read this long poem, but felt the need to rearrange it nonetheless. What a nice surprise that you did bother - and enjoyed. Thanks! Yours, ~Nina
