- Just another Cigarette -

Piping hot coffee in a

beautiful cup, that has a

gold ring around its  Lip,

matching saucer also with

a gold ring around its

border,

An ornate ashtray waiting

to be filled with death,

Dust to dust. Ashes to

Ashes, crosses my mind,

A brand new pack of

cigarettes, with the brand

name in bold appealing

letters, tightly wrapped in

cellophane to preserve its

freshness,

A gold ribbon waiting to be

unfurled, so as to release

the enemy who brings

pleasure, but also death

from within.

Cole Trane playing softly

on a CD, memories of a

dear friend come flooding

in,

Memories of all nighters

discussing poetry,

philosophy, culture and

politics,

Gone are the nights of

Blues club hoping on 125th,

of smoke filled room and

aged Cabernets,

Of summer's day playing

Chess in central park, and

Aunt Mae’s place to play

some spades,

I recall so many things, but

most of all the thing that

sticks, is the alcohol and

cigarettes,

The cancer and emphysema

did him in, slowly and most

assuredly.

The last words I remember

he said in the hospital.

while clinging to life on an

iron lung,

Please!

Just another cigarette

before I go.

Just another Cigarette

Eddie, You hit me in the gut with this one, for I am an addict of cigarettes, first to be cool, and then I got hooked. You did a wondeful job explaining the addicts need and wants, even if it's his last breath. _____________________________ To write a touching poem, you must gently stir the soul, if it brings forth tears or smiles, then the story was beautifully told. ________Janice Pearce_________

Janice,

The reason I could convey that addiction it's because I'm hooked also. thanks for read and your comment! Eddie

Awesome Eddie!

I have quit so many times over the years only to go back. Last time was three and one half years. I had no trouble stopping the drugs, no trouble stopping the alcohol. Nicotine is a whole different story. Well done. A few spot as follows that needs a little correcting. Piping hot coffee in a beautiful cup, that has a gold ring around itsLip,(its lip) matching saucer also with a gold ring around its boarder,(border) Of summer’s day playing Chest in central park, and (Chess) Aunt Mae’s place to play some spades, Respectfully, Rett: "If law abiding citizens are denied guns, the police don't need theirs. Hi Eddie

I quit over 25 years ago--but not a day goes by that I don't think about how it would be to light up and french inhale again. I know if I took one, I'd be off the wagon and back to 2 pack a day habit. Who can afford this anymore? That's over $10 a day. Deelilah

delilah,

It's more like $15. a day here in NYC if you smoking two packs a day, that $ 5,460. a year. You can pay the taxes on your house with that kind of money! thanks for stopping by and commenting, Eddie

great write on cig's it's a pity we cant ban them across the board,Start by banning them to 16 year olds the first year and the next to 17 year olds and on one year at a time, and enforce the ban, but as usual to many people will make money from black market selling to ever win. Only way is to try with the parents, can we win NO. Here they cost nearly $7-00 per pack and we give money to unemployed people, because they have no jobs, but they still smoke. Waiting to see your next one on Drinking Eh! That is even worse with the young ones here. Did we really make this place, with such care, best go back to God and get the original plans. You take care out there, Yours Ian.T

Ian,

your idea is dangerous, because smoker would rally together and their power backed by big money would overwhelm any legislation. Besides freedom is one of the things that you can't take away! (freedom to smoke) In the USA smokers are big contributors to the economy. Taxes and health care make loads of money on smokers. thanks for your wonderful idea, but there's more problems with the idea then a solution. thanks for stopping by and reading, my friend! Eddie

Smoking

Hi Eduardo, I think you neatly portray the kind of associations that help to make smoking attractive (the coffee, the ornate ashtray, the packaging, the blues concerts, the all-night student gatherings and so on). Personally I stopped smoking several years ago and anyway I never smoked a lot, so I hope to escape from the negative effects, but my brother-in-law died of lung cancer in his early fifties after smoking two or three packs a day for over thirty years. He was a strong man and I guess he thought he was strong enough to get away with it, but no one is immune to all that deadly smoke. Best wishes, Robert.

Donkey

Hi Rett, The photograph is of the eye of a beautiful whitish-grey donkey I met one day. I have actually tried to update the picture several times because I'm worried that no one will know what it portrays, but I don't seem to understand the mechanism for changing pictures. I'm working on it... By the way, I chose the donkey to represent me in the photo because I seem to have made loads of dumb decisions in my life, and also because I can be extremely stubborn. Best wishes, Robert.

It's sad how some people don't take action until it's too late. I smoked on and off from 19-23 less than a pack a week, and even that I felt was too much. It was only on my work days, and it was about 2-3 a night. I was tired of running low on air sometimes, and not being able to run as far or as long as normal. Jon's in the same boat now, and smokes around the same amount that I used to. Ironically enough, when we were in Richmond, I was contacted by Philip Morris (they have a huge plant down there) for a field service engineer position. I told them that I'd sooner burn their plant down than ever work for such a company. Great one Eddie!

Eddie, you did a great job with this poem. SO very many can certainly relate. I quit smoking for nine years, cold turkey. found myself only having a cigarette when I had to go to the hospital while my stepdad started his battle with cancer. he came home, i didn't smoke. until nine years ago. i got divorced and started again. i've tried to quit many times since then, but to no avail. they have added some many more chemicals. here in pa, they have banned smoking in restaurants and bars that sell food, and we have stopped smoking in our house, i'm down to a 1/2 pack a day. i'm hoping to be able to stop fully soon. Every line in your poem is a memory to me. kudos on this one! Live, Laugh and Love (and don't forget to write) Tink

From addict to addict

You convey perfectly how alluring a fresh pack of cigarettes can be to the real addict (read: me). Even though I started smoking late and have since had a break of 4 years, I fell for those little devils again. I really had thought I could smoke just one cigarette...silly me! Concerning people smoking on their deathbed, I just hope I won´t end up like that. I am planning to stop smoking- but aren´t we always doing that?! With poetic regards, ID P.S. Please correct the spelling of "wrapped" (l.14), it´s such a pity if there´s a typo in an otherwise well-written piece.

Dragon,

Pity I don't want, but a correction I accept with gratitude. We post here to teach and learn. now to the point, this was write because of my own battles with the sticks of death. I can understand how you feel, because I find great pleasure in smoking and that where my problem lays. It's what makes it difficult to quit. I'm smoking for over 40 years, and so far when I have my lungs checked< their fine. I do exercise a lot maybe that helps? who knows, I don't or the Doctors? thanks for stopping by and posting your plight with death! thanks always, Eddie "do like the once barren tree: flourish and like the planted seed: rise" Jose De Diego

Excellant write. I broke myself of smoking before I even got started when I was 19. I bought a pack of Winstons and smoked the whole pack, and tried to inhale so I could look "good" while I smoked. It wasn't long before I was on the living room floor, sicker than a dog. watching the ceiling go round and round. Stupid. I am asthmatic, had no business even thinking about it.

Eddie - Thank God I didn't miss this

This is an awesome piece - packed with detail. You know I am not a smoker - have never been. I have had and still do have the occasional cigarette. I quite enjoy it in company but I have never been hooked. This write has special significance because I recently lost an uncle (died of throat cancer). He was a chain smoker. I literally saw him go through a lot of suffering, pain and disfigurement. The sad part is he was a great sportsman and a very vivacious, jovial and positive person. Smoking absolutely destroyed him. Leonard

Leo,

I'm so sorry to hear about your "Vivacious" uncle. Yes it does destroy, but it's not the habit only that keeps people from stopping, it's also the pleasure that they get from the cigarette. Be careful with the pleasure it is what leads to habit in everything we do!! thanks for sharing!! Eddie

JUST ANOTHER CIGARETTE

This is a beautiful poem, Eduardo. So very impressive. I left cigarrette at early age of 21. In thirties took to cigar and pipe smoking. For last five years I am off smoking but love occasional drinks. No doubt cigarette thrills but kills. -Mohammad. I was a passionate smoker...

and I mean PASSIONATE! they operated cancer out of me about a week ago. (I'm 26, by the way) not a fun experience, it's surely not worth it. thank you for this post, I'll think about the ashtray waiting for death a lot in the next few weeks. won't be easy for me to stop this horrible habit.

Eddie,

I just had to re-read this, because I am trying to quit smoking. For real!!! I wanted to add a thought to your reminiscences about smoke-filled clubs. Here in Germany, smoking in clubs and pubs has recently been banned. A friend of mine recently went to our local discotheque, where none of us had been since our teens. He was astonished that he was able to see the people on the other side of the dancefloor. In the old times, they would have been hidden by clouds of cigarette smoke. This made me think, Ink
