Things or Life

She says they ought to change the tiles
in kitchen, hall and bathroom,
or that the sofa's getting old
and needs replacing soon.

He says they shouldn't spend their cash
on THINGS, but on enjoying LIFE:
explore the world with no-frills flights,
a backpack and a penknife!

She likes a pretty, cosy nest;
he has a restless need to fly.
Neither of them gets their way,
but now and then they try...

Interests in common

Hi Zarul, Thanks for your comment. When we fall in love, we don't usually bother to think about whether we have similar interests to our partner. But in the long term this question is pretty important. Best wishes, Robert.

Hi Robert -

I enjoyed your poem for its' wistful sweetness & underlying sadness. There appears to be an acceptance of compromise in the last 2 lines...& almost a creeping redemption in the line "but now and then they try…". Good, simple write. Regards, Jo

Wistfulness

Hi Jo, Yes, this poem is a little wistful, because even people who really love one another still seem to limit each other's self-realization when they live together for a long time. Thanks for the comment. Best wishes, Robert.

Priorities

Hi, Thanks for your comment. I think your use of the word 'priorities' is very appropriate. There are so many different ways to spend our time and money these days that we have to establish clear preferences, and we are unlikely to entirely coincide with our partners. For my wife, a large shopping centre is a kind of heaven. For me, it's a kind of hell! Best wishes, Robert.
