Defiantly Pagan

Who among you now is left that hears the measured pace of cloven feet, and does not cower at the stamping tread of all-consuming heat upon the lifeless night of winter’s breath? How many of you still can see the warmth of wisdom’s light that burns between his curving horns as he searches through the forest’s night? Which of you can still recall the searing, wondrous joy of sleeping life renewed by fervent lust, or the deep rich smell of earthen must that heralds his approach? For now you cower in a feeble light of murdered man made into God fearful of the twisting shadow with which the avarice of evil men replaced His might and even now you wonder at the emptiness of soul that Choice of Darkened Ignorance replaced. I still hear him; I can hear him now, and welcome his approach upon this longest of dark nights. he searches for his pale frost-rimmed Love, horns scraping sound from leafless branch, hooves ringing on the frozen earth, a bellowed roar of need and lust deep and distant through the trees. And in this glade where ancient trees stand sentinel over his sleeping love, he will find her; He will take her, and in that rough and fervent joining where hungry eager thighs enclose the urgency of joyous, unchained lust the deadened world becomes renewed, and life returns again to shine away the dark. So keep close to that fitful light of what you mistakenly believe is right for when you turn your icy back and stare out to the edge of night the eyes that stare back from the black are mine, and those of whom I love, the Lady White and her stamping snorting love, The Lord Of Misrule.

I like this alot!

Just a few thoughts: 1) "How many of you can still see" --> This line seems a little awkward, maybe because its pattern of beats is different from the similar lines that come before and after. 2) The end of stanza 4 has some long lines. I wonder how you would feel about breaking them, e.g., With which the avarice of evil men replaced his might 3) "I still hear him; I can hear him now," --> I like how you've punctuated this line to give it the feel that he's coming near. 4) "He searches for his pale, frost-rimmed Love," --> love this line I thought all of stanza 5 was very good. 5) "Stand sentinel over his pale, sleeping Love," --> maybe another word besides "pale," since you just used it? Similarly, the use of "eager." 6) "He will find her; He will take her," --> Again, I like how you've punctuated it to give it an urgent quality. Vivid imagery. Good pacing. Strong ending. Good piece.

RE: I like this alot

Thanks very much for your thoughts. Yes, everything you said about it made sense, and I edited accordingly. I also changed the 5th line of the last verse, after thinking about what you said regarding the beat of the first line. I'm still not happy with the first line, though, so I think I'll think about it some more! Thank you again, Arrow, for your criticism - it is exactly why I joined Neopoet in the first place.

Good Evening Race

A powerful poem. It took my breath away. But, just a poem? I think not. Yours, Deelilah

Just a poem

Well, OK Deelilah, maybe NOT "just a poem"! Heehee. But I am glad that you enjoyed it. I enjoy looking at things from the other side...as you can probably tell! This was particularly powerful, when I encountered that deer. Perhaps something old and arcane was sending me a message that day? I don't know, but the results were certainly pretty good, I think. You also brought a smile to my face. This is a very, very busy time of the year for me, and I normally do very little posting or anything on-line, not until after the new year. But you made me chuckle, so I had to reply! Thanks Deelilah, and again, I am glad that you enjoyed it. Respectfully, Jim

Yes, Heehee

I too enjoy looking at things from the other side, although my work might center around fallen angels rather than horny devils, although horny devils can be mighty entertaining. I had to reply to your reply because it brought a smile to my face also, as did these images. Looking forward to reading more soon, when you're not so busy. Deelilah
