Looking Back From November 4, 2008

They called out doom and misery;
Reigns of terror from sea to sea,
They sowed distrust complacently,
Those horrors who stole the show

We looked and watched and yet we failed
History called  us and we quailed
And peace and hope, it was derailed,
Who were they to lay us low?

And now they scamper from the lights
While harsh reality alights
And clears the smoke from all our sights,
Their disgrace is apropos.

Jon

I like the poem, and the message (will the REAL person please stand up?) but am not sure how well the word 'complacently' fits in. I guess I can kind of see it as meaning second nature as far as having the wool pulled over our eyes... but still not sitting right for some reason. Nice work. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"When I was strong, strong in the sound thought I'd see when day was done. Thanks for the review and comment - this piece does need work and I appreciate you forcing me to return to the wording. Now, before folks get the wrong idea, I've been a registered Republican for 29+ years but I am a Republican in the vein of Eisenhower not Reagan or his clown-like idiot-stepchild, George W. Bush. As a poli-sci wonk I know that government has legitimate functions beyond securing avarice for a few select families and thus have been ostracized from the current incarnation of the Republican party for most of my life. I'll see what happens next and make a decision as to abandoning my party should I decide it is hopelessly mired in the politics of hate and the fabric of militant fundamentalism. While I'm waiting, I'll take another look at the poem and clean it up. --Jonathan Annoying the world, one person at a time (Group discounts available)

LOL

Completely understand. I'm a gun-totin' (well... not anymore, we're in New York now) right-wing, Christian Libertarian (but still mostly conservative) who's been waiting for a good candidate for years!! Clinton was the best one yet imvho. Only reason why I didn't vote for our Libertarian presidential candidate (Bob Barr) was because it would have automatically thrown a vote to Obama. At least one good thing might come out of this: If Obama gets assassinated, at least we might have a shot at a half-assed decent president. I rather would have Biden than Obama AND Palin... I'll try to dodge the tongue lashing - and am looking forward to the revisions. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"When I was strong, strong in the sound thought I'd see when day was done. Look Forward !

We did "look & watch", we did "fail"; history called us & where were we? Have peace & hope become "derailed"? The smoke hasn't yet cleared, disgrace is apropos but whose? Ours or theirs? Time will tell. These are not comments, just thoughts as a result of reading your poem. Another conservative here - I am apalled at what is being done to our Constitution; and to our beloved country. My husband is so distressed at the men he was with on Iwo Jima & Okinawa he can't watch the news. I am still waiting for our president-elect wo produce an authentic birth certificate. He is actually an illegal alien and doesn't use his real name of Soetoro which he became as adopted son of Lolo Soetoro and akllowed him to attend school in Indonesia - that's their law. His paternal grandmother was present at his birth in Mombasa, Kenya! He wasn't born in Hawaii, so somebody's lying. I salute all veterans and thank them for protcting my freedoms. I can write, thanks to my teachers; I can write in English - thanks to our American servicemen/women. Jonathan, once again you wrote stiring words and put some deep thoughts in print for us to ponder. My best to all, Marilyn
