We Are Not Giants

"and here is Uncle Casey (in the marines)
he had a heart attack a year ago."we are not giants
there are no violins
while you are clenching the
bars of the cotton trimmed hosptial bed

you may find someone to carry up the
weight of the memory, to pawn off
a few last words you manage to
let slip between pouts of conciousness
and morphine.

we are not giants,
and in time the body will be felt
as a cage,
unpoliced and savage.

we are not giants
but you can blame this on his black and white
photo, his eyes told you he would always be young.

We Are Not Giants

I like this insightful piece. the images are clear. just a good piece. Giant has a message i just can't seem to put into words, but the meaning is clear to me. Respectfully Yours, Barbara

Goes down to the core of the soul

Whitetea...

a lovely poem... we are not giants... I read it as the explanation of getting older to one who is young... and bouncing around like there is no tomorrow... we are not giants... deeply moving piece for me... thanks for posting Richard

hello richard

glad you caught where i was going with this. someone i know was going through a family photo dvd. there was a snapshot of a young marine who looked around my age when the picture was taken. he looked like a few people i've known. just as quickly as the photo appeared she told me how he died. it was very strange to hear that after seeing a picture from when he seemed strong and full of life. i couldn't shake the picture off of my mind the rest of the day.
