Respect

Respect can't be taught
it must be given
understanding the next man
comes from within

You must know yourself
the lines you shouldn't cross
you know what bothers you
you are not that lost

Everyone is different
yet we are all the same
basic human emotions
searching for blame

Know yourself
know what to expect
give and demand
the same respect

Every move you make
affects someone somehow
the way you treat others
is what you'll need to allow

Richard

Very good subject, very good lesson full of truth and it also read to me as smooth as a freshly pave road in a luxury car. Really really good write with a smooth flow. I loved it! Hi Rett...

it is actually your fault that this one was submitted..lol I read a comment of yours saying exactly what this one says, I wrote it years ago but dug it up because of your wise comments... I thank you for the inspiration and for taking the time to read... and if you didn't live so far away I'd invite you out to breakfast one morning... oh well... I'll have coffee with my wife... she is off work tomorrow... Richard

Hi Richard - Very thoughtful piece

Everything you have mentioned is so important in life. Expressing oneself in this way shows the sense of responsibility enshrined within. The lines especially: Every move you make effects someone somehow the way you treat others is what you’ll need to allow Shows you to be a person who respects the feelings of others. I agree with Chrys: "Do not do unto others ....." Leonard

Vote for Wanda

Get rid of the bums in Washington. I am on that bandwagon. She has my vote. Respectfully, Rett: "Does this election remind you of The Emperors New Clothes? No one has the guts to tell him because..." Rett

It goes back to a saying from the 60's

"Can't we all just get along?" Well put together write here. I'd vote for Wanda too, she's cool! I liked your poem, but there are people in this world who take respect and totally cram disrespect till you want to vomit. I do not put labels on anyone. To me your heritage and where you live does not matter, what is important though is if a person is a hurtful bully. You cannot get along with some people no matter what you do. You can say the sky is blue and they will disagree. So disrespect once thrown in your face over and over by people who think the sky is purple cannot be reasoned with unless you agree with everything they say... and thats where you do a slow fade and give up your values just to get along. I care not what any man or woman thinks of me (and that is how it should be). Can I lay my head down on the pillow and say I did not hurt anyone with displaced anger they did not deserve? Yes I can. Call it being a Christian, good guy whatever. Some people can kill and it does not bother them. You cannot hand them respect. Your friend, Patty

Hi Patty...

thank you for reading and commenting on my poem... I am very aware of what is being said here on the site... I am glad that you are here and glad that our respect for one another's feelings and beliefs are able to wade through any differences we may have... I thank you for that.. I wish I could fix the world and all of its problems.. but I wouldn't even know where to begin... I only know that I will do my little part in it as best I can... thanks again Patty your friend Richard

Hi Mark...

I'll be glad to explain... the way you treat others is what you'll need to allow. I guess it is a bit of a confusing line... but it means that if you treat others badly, don't be surprised if you are treated badly as well... and vicey vercy... I appreciate you reading... thanks Richard

HI Richard

as a teen and growing poem, this poem teaches me in great amounts about Respect. Thank you for that. Very nice and true poem this is. So straightforward. You are too good a poet to need bombastic words to make your poems beautiful. In stanza 2, line 2 - i think it would sound better if yoi change the word don't to shouldn't. Dont you think so? This is just a suggedtion from mine. VERY NIE WORK. my dear friend. GREAT DAY SMILE ZARUL

Hey Richard,

as I was reading this it made me think of the teaching of "Sun Tzu's the art of war" to do battle one must know oneself Before engaging another, very important lesson that I live by. this is a wonderful true write! thanks, Eddie "do like the once barren tree: flourish and like the planted seed: rise" Jose de Diego

wrought piece. Thanx. May I suggest a spelling change: In Every move you make effects someone you've got the wrong effects/affects. Make it affects ... and then you've got a winner, and then you're less a sinner. Regards, Chuck

reapect poem

Moon, When I was young, my father used to sing Aretha Franklin's RESPECT. Many years later, I have some basic priciples to live by. One of them is "Give respect to find out who you are talking to." People say my manner is a cross between English, and old southern U.S.A. In other words, I agree with you! wcw

Respect poem reprise...

Moon, This is a worthy subject handled well by a good poet. Most writers who look deep for the truth will agree with points of your view. I belive respect starts with earning it, then offering it, then in all fairness...getting it. wcw
