Midnight sea
Midnight, sea lapping at my feet,
ink shining in palid moon-streams,
the night-scape sparkling, bitter-sweet
remembrance of brighter star-beams,
when I had shared their thousand eyes
in times of youthful, cloudless skies.
Wind teasing me with rippled calm
that dares each traveller venture deep
beyond life’s soft-shelled, sandy balm
which keeps doubts safe in gritted sleep
and dreams that our tomorrow turns
the tides of yesterday’s concerns.
They say moon-gazing drives men mad,
but I have seen too many sanewhose light was spent before they had
the strength to twist their minds in pain,
or lose their grip in clinging sand
that sucks each step upon life’s strand.
