EKPO

EKPO When echo of the big ekpo drumsReverberated from the village squareTalking drums, conveyed messagesThat could only be decipheredBy trained ears of the initiates, the cult,The community’s society guided their steps Dom – Dom – Dom, the drums beatThe white man knows his bookWe, the sons of the soil, know ekpo Everywhere became black and darkNot by threatening rain cloud, nor smokeBut by masquerading guiding spiritsOf our customs and values in the clansWhen criminals and evil doers were nailedFrom head, pinned to the ground, in disgrace Dom – Dom – Dom, the drums beatThe white man knows his bookWe, the sons of the soil, know ekpo Ekpo danced and jumped over the roofAkpan ekpo, possessed by a skull, ran wild,Was restrained by two hefty men with ropesChildren, women and non initiates stayed awayThe eighth month had its peak and taboosThat was the spiritual cleansing of the land The drums are not beating anymoreWe, the sons of the soil, who knew ekpoNow know book and ekpo is history. Criminals are running wild, nowWith reckless abandon and impunityThieves, no longer afraid of being knownKill, steal and swear in God’s holy name,Blab blabs blab ‘the evidence I shall give…’And the accused is discharged and acquitted

EKPO

It is now gone, to the art of civilisation which in its coming of age brings not peace, but continuous battles of greed and strife, of non conformity to those who cannot live by basic rules. Well Written and in understanding it have my hands are tied by the now norm. Yours Ian.T

Thanks Yenti

Public office holders would rather swear by the Bible or Koran as they know that nothing would happen to them if they embezzle and cover their tracks, they also know that they would not escape if they swear by the symbols of the gods of the land. The communities maintained high moral standards and there was peace everywhere. All these are history now. Thank you for the reading and for the comments. Best wishes. T.

This situation is the same worldwide, now. As we abandon our forfathers traditions and ways. It is the norm as Yenti says, but when I read your write I am able to see how far we have moved away from peaceful ways. It does bother me that you make comment about "the white man" I can truefully say I do not see the difference in color of skin. It is the attitude or the heart of a person that separates one person from another for me.

Thank you for the reading and for your comments. Our ways have change greatly due to emphasis on money and lifestyle. The reference to 'white man' has no racial implication, it refers to western education and religion that have conquered our old ways. Going to school has brought with it good things but it distanced us from our traditional ways. It might interest you to know that my wife is from the UK and my children are mixed, in fact, in terms of colour, I am the minority in the house. Colour is not the issue here. May be, we should include ekpo in our school curriculum. Best wishes. T.

Masqurading guiding spirits!!

You really got me in that stanza,I fully understand and appreciate the theme and like the message been passed therein. In as much as I see the benefits of Westernization,I always wish that we could strike a common ground with the values that obtain here as it was before, like reverting to the ideals of 'those' days and fully reaping the benefits of 'these' days.If only...............

Like most masquarades, epko, eka ekong, ntuk ododio and even ayo represent the spirits of the gods, ancestors or institutions. They guarded the values and protected the people. For example, Abuja carnival has come to stay and it is an attempt to revive our culture, but without the essence that once guided the people. Thank you for the reading and for the comments. Best wishes. T.
