Glad it was you

because I would probably have screamed like a baby thinking it was a spider. The bad thing is that as big as my forehead is getting *ahem* he would have had plenty of space to glance off of. I really liked this one. Respectfully, Rett: "The only thing observable with the naked eye to exceed the speed of light is rumor" Unknown

My mosquito/bird landing strip ...

extends through forehead, up past the overwhelmingly major part of central crown, and at least to some (actually, major) extent lips---in a sort of half-moon shape---well into the mid- to lower part of the back of my head. And of course I wear a T-shirt that says "Bald by Choice"---a bald lie, to frame it brutally bluntly. It appears I'm ethically, shamelessly challenged in that regard. (It's no wonder the gals (and even some guys) think I'm sexy. Bein' thus hair-challenged, that is. (No surprise, that.)) Thanx, Chuck

lol

I second Rett, as I've done that countless times: flinch, and then hear the condescending "it was only a fly!" I hate hating bugs..... LMAO! As for the "landing strip" - I have no suggestions. Plant Chia pet mix on it, and water? I'll be thinking of this all day, at work. Thanks! [Chuckling as I go out the door] "There's no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you." Will Rogers

Thanx, all

I'm not generally bugged. By bugs, that is. Unless they're the blood-sucking variety. Or unless they're the yellowjacket sort that likes to land on bare skin to explore. I have to laugh. Can't tell the tale without correcting the listener: "A yellowjacket crawled to the space between my middle and ring fingers---you, know, the skin fold there that tightens out thinly when the fingers are spread. and wouldn't you know it, I got bit. Took several days for the spot to heal beyond sensitive stage." Inevitably a listener will proceed to describe an episode where a bee/yellowjacket stung. I interrupt: "No. That isn't what happened to me. The yj bit me. Sliced a tiny snippet of skin from between my fingers with its mouth. I'm talking here about carnivory, not stingivory. I'm talking about the front end of the insect, not the rear---you know, that butt part where the stinger lives. That particular critter did not sting me. It BIT me!" I'm sure everyone's got major bug stories to tell, most of 'em true. Endless subject. Yours, Chuck

It liked you...

Don't you know a love bite when you feel one? Actually, in all seriousness, it probably was either lookin' for some goodies to eat, or it wanted nesting material. I've written ...

a piece I'll call "On Displaying Barbara" or "on displaying barbara." It's at home. One day soon I'll remember to copy it out for trip to the library ... and their computer(s). Yup, yellowjackets can be persistent---and sticky. Nowadays if one brushes my cheek or back of my hand and continues the harrassment overlong, I'll bat it down quickly. Then, I'm ashamed to say, I step on it. I've been stung by a whole hive of yellowjackets, once when I was three years old (at least, by my mother's account, 37 stings, by the way, before she could fight them off long enough to gain shelter for me), the second time when 18. I won't chance an angry bee bringing its buddies to do me damage, extensive or otherwise. I'll hold to my present policy till I think of something else, if ever. Thanx, Chuck

I love dragonflies... have a few dragonfly pins. A couple of weeks ago I saw the first one this year. It checked me out; usually they fly on me... it's a joy when creatures visit us...my kids have a way, too. Connection with nature... Btw Barbara your grandbaby is unbelievably alert... must be a crystal child... ~A

I'm absolutely ...

fascinated by dragonflies, a fact that didn't stop my startle reflex when the one I write about in the piece above glanced off me. I feel somehow honored when one visits me on the patio and spends time loitering on my knee, for instance. And actually it's more frequent than expectable. Thanx, Chuck

chuckles gleefully,

you glanced it perfectly, and look at the amount of feedback from 3 lines! Extraordinary! Yes, I feel graced by visits from dragonflies and some spiders. You got to be fussy with spiders in Aussie. Funnelwebs have been known to take on tractors. cheers, Jess

Glancing and dancing

My dear mother stood quite still, while I took a close-up photo of a huge wonderfully big-eyed dragonfly on her hand knitted cardigan, she was at one with nature and would have seen your poem as a caress from nature too, so soft the landing of an almost weightless insect is on our great thick skins. Glancing and dancing they join our day that way. Ann of Norway
