As All Small Children Do

I stepped into
the rain today
as it fell softly
from the sky

didn't run
for cover as
we adults are
taught to do
I anticipated
each cloud's tear
yet each came
as a surprise
the shower fell
at a steady pace
as it gently
touched my face
I am not alone
the little girl
next door
is delightfully
laughing,
she is enjoying
it too
her echoes bounce
from cloud to cloud
I learned something
profound today;
each year I
promise to step
into the rain
as all small
children do.

Jan- Wow

Clouds tears, but each coming as a surprise. What an awesome poem. You still amaze me. It sounds like a good tradition to start. When I was a girl we stopped up the gutters but left enough open to make a current and floated boats (sticks) controlled with a handy branch. But the water felt warmer as a child. Thanks for the memories...... Patty

Rain that bring back youth

Janice, water is the purifier of life, baptism is a rebirth of life. I love the way you use the rain as a tool to wash away the baggage we care with us. the rain brings us back to who we really are, the simple innocents of life. I love this write, it evokes beautiful childhood imagery. thanks this is a keeper. Eddie "We know the mysteries of philosophy and of the art of Holy Poetry" By Jose de Diego

Rain...

This poem brings back memory of the excitement we had as children running naked in the rain. We came out shivering with our teeth making fast rhythmic clicks, it used to be fun though, not minding if one would catch cold. As adult we run away from getting wet by the rain. This is a good write. The short lines gives an impression of rain showers coming down 'softly' to the reader. The imagery of the cloud crying adds depth to the poem. The promise to step into the rain each year depicts a cleansing ritual that will make the poet to remain ever young at heart. Best wishes. T.

not just young children...

Janice, Many of the poems in my book "Dichotomy" involve the primordial forces. The rain, the wind, the waves, etc.* I'm tempted to post some here, but most are not short and sweet, as yours is. I have always, and will always, find time and place, to go naked in the rain, and wind, and waves. Nice work. I'd like to see more of your poems. wcw

Another fine piece from a fine word smith

Hi Janice, This poem takes me back to the days when I loved frolicking in the rain. Actually it's not an age thing because I still love it. Anything that brings me close to nature gives me great joy. Leonard

Nicely ...

wrought. Perfect subject. There's something delicious about an adult turning child. I suppose it means, at least in one instance, our culture dictates (read: tyrannies) haven't removed---at least not totally---all remnants of the child that once was. Or was less blemished. The short lines contribute to its childlikeness. Thanx, Chuck PS: Profouund? I see an inconsistency with the capitalization of Didn't, as in "Didn't run," with the rest of the piece not capped except for pronoun I. Although that may be intentional on your part, I'm doubtful about it.

This poem made me smile, as I can fondly remember splashing through the rain. of each single drop heavily soaking me in time from work to home from home to work the hiss of cars and trucks and buses blue and white yet there is something exciting about this experience this closeness from cloud to earth we are the last few feet we catch them where we can in all our exhuberance

Adore this Janice

no crit at all, just gorgeous and important. You know I sometimes catch myself hunching up and speeding up in the rain and remind myself, I'm not going to get any wetter, just tenser and miserabler (sic?). So I stop and let it rain on me. cheers, Jess

As all small children do

Hi JAN Just love this poem. Broght back memeories of me waking on the mountains. The gentle rains falls, so just go walking in the rain as a new born babe, totally feeling the rain fall. Iook up as it covers my whole body and the wind to dry me off. Nothing like it everyone should try it. The most amazing feeling ever. Every cell in your body is alive. I love nature in all it elements. A place i belong. Electricblue
