Fall of Richmond

To be in a place
Which houses so much history
If one sits, they can almost hear the bugle.
Almost hear the cannons.
And the shouts of the fallen
As their fate is sealed
Amidst the rubble

Advancements and retreats
On both sides
False hope of a victory
Snuffed out by leading Generals.
Attack and counter attack
Waves of men fall
Acts of desperation
As the Confederacy blindly charges.

The advance to Petersburg
Was the beginning of the end.
And in the spring of '65
As Union forces stormed Richmond.
A mighty city had already fallen.
Burnt
Ruined

Lee admits defeat
And goes back to his home
Crowds pay their respects
To the hero of the South.
But all he does is silently bows.
And closes the door
On another chapter of history.

Thank you

Janice - Glad you liked! I love Am. CW history. Anna - I wrote that, because as Robert E. Lee was walking to his home amidst the throng of people, he said nothing. Upon reaching his doorstep, he turned and bowed, then walked inside his home and closed the door. A silent admission of defeat but acknowledgement also of the loyalty behind him. Thanks for reading. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- "I just read an article on the dangers of drinking.... Scared the crap out of me. So that's it! After today, no more reading!" - Lex M.

Civil war

interesting, and very good. My son-in-law is a civil war buff. I will show this to him. He of course, would have fought for General Lee. When I was attending college in the '90's, I took a required course on Texas history. The professor was very verbal in his dislike for the Yankees and the burning and destroying Gen.Sherman did. I never did open my mouth the entire semester, as I was fresh from up north, and you could not miss my Yankee accent.

Thanks again!

Anna - Quite a thought-provoking observation you bring forth there. I like that. Peter - Condescending? Hardly. Thank you for the nice comments, and for reading. Leeanne - Thank you for the compliments. Welcome to the site. Linda - LOL!! Luckily, I've never had a "pinpointable" accent, so I'd be able to rail at either side equally.... Thanks for the comments, and yes, please do show to your son-and-law. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- "I just read an article on the dangers of drinking....
