THE MONSTER IN THE DARK

THE MONSTER IN THE DARK     As a child, like most children, I dreaded pitch dark places The monster lurked in the shadows Fear stupefied my senses Goose pimples covered the body But the dreaded object never came   Now that I have grown up I see darkness in a different light Black is to white what night is to day Rest and labour revolve in cycles And rejuvenate the body and soul Life is a continuum   What monster do you see in the dark? Be it a ghost or evil spirit, try to be sure Let the blind man describe what he senses In the dark, with eyes that cannot see Fear lurks in the hearts of men Where light or sun may never shine

You touched on a theme that all children can relate to. The transition into the fear of adults, and the concept of internal darkness as opposed to a darken room was flawless - and begs answer to the question of what is it we repress? Outstanding. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- "I just read an article on the dangers of drinking.... Scared the crap out of me. So that's it! After today, no more reading!" - Lex M.

Thank you for the reading and a balanced appreciation of the poem. Yes, the monster may not really reside in dark places, but in the hearts and minds of men. Best wishes. T.

I remember

my fear of the dark as a child, almost paralyzing, really. I know my fears as an adult, and I refuse to let them "get me". Jess says it better than I do.

I thought once,,,

Linda, As a child, back in the village, I went outside to piss, it was very dark and I couldn't see anything, haing just left the lantern in the room, a dog saw me and ran away with one scary sound which made me thought it was a ghost, goose pimples and all, you know. Thanks for the reading and for the comment. Best wishes. T.

You gave me an idea for writing. We tell children all of these perfect world stories, where everyone is happy. But they still conjure up monsters. Just rambling. I loved your theme of this cycle, like this is something we are born with and will continue to fight, understand, and relate with. Thankyou for sharing this.
