Remembering 9/11/01

I was asleep, preparing for work that night.
And then the phone rang.
"Turn on the television!  New York was just bombed!"
Flying down the stairs, I see smoke billowing from the Towers.
And again at the Pentagon.
Yet again in Pennsylvania.
My heart dropped into my shoes
As I watched the towers fall.
Asking myself
Who?
Why?

The military wanted to send F-16s out to intercept
Flights 11 and 175.
They needed ROE and authorization from the president.
But he was nowhere to be found.
He was reading to schoolkids
With a stupid blank look on his face
As his advisors were telling him
That our great country was under attack.

The Conservatives blame Clinton.
The Republicans blame Osama
But those people as they died
Blamed God.
And all the finger-pointing in the world
Still couldn't make up for the
Destroyed families.
Parentless children
And the smoking ruins
In three states

So take those memories to heart
The next time you become complacent.
Never forget the largest tragedy
On Amercian soil
Since WW2
And as my friend Rett's picture claims:
"I remember, do you?"
