Open Eyes

Do you believe in magic
tip the scales and see
do you believe in what you have
do you believe in me

I'm the Shaman here from long ago
I am the Hoo-Ha Voodoo seed
just take a moment, say you know,
and set this demon free

There is no escape, nowhere to run,
no place that I can't reach...
I'll weave a magic spell on you,
and you'll belong to me.

I'm the crave in all your cravings
you are the magic that's in me
I'm the Shaman here from long ago
Open Eyes
.... give me what I need

Open Eyes

Richard In 'Open Eyes', the poet is a magician with Hoo-Ha Voodoo seed. His proposition does not give his lover any choice and there is nothing the lover can do. In Nigerian parlance, 'open eyes' means being authoritative, commanding, and imposing. This, the poet has demonstrated that he is the master. If we put his position against the feminist trend of equality of sexes and complimentary roles in a relationship, then we have come to a brick wall. The kind of relationship where the woman or the man does not have a say could be lopsided and therefore may lack excitement. I like the poem as it shows the macho that we have in relationships in Africa and I belief elsewhere in the world. Best wishes. T.

understanding

Richard, Let me start by saying that I really enjoyed it. It seems to me that in the first verse you already have this person, but there love is in question. In the second verse it's like your asking them to look into themself, because you are there. In the third verse it sounds like you'll do what ever it takes to keep them, because you love them and they you. now you take control and tell them, that you are both one single being that can never be separated. Is that where you were going, if it was then damn that was good. if a man does not know love, he does not know God

Eddie...

this was just a fun write for me that sort of blurted onto the page.. Most of my poems about love are about my wife, this one is about the look that I hope to keep receiving from her.. so , yes... your interpretation is right on the money... appreciate your in-depth look into this write... Richard
