debt

my mothers old friend
talked about the

Jubilee

year in the bible
when someone  turned
50.  They were welcomed

celebrated, debts erased.
They would feast.
given empty slates after years
of being too awake.

she raised her arms out
in between the checking aisles.
ready for that to begin,
her husband might dig himself up,
and for her sake,
maybe they could forget.

She
kind of smiled in spite of herself
and grabbed the leather handles
of her old purse.

I teared up

and believe me that doesn't happen much on these pages. I grief for the callosness of our society and for what your mother felt. But I gave her 2 Tshirts. One says "I may be old but I am formidable" and the other says "Womens Sewing Circle and Terrorist Society". Both work for her and she is 82. cheers, Jess p.s. she loved her husband but only truly came alive when he died.

Women sewing circle and terrorist society. I laughed pretty hard at that, that is clever. thankyou, my socialist friend. I have seen people break their backs just to make ends meet. There are so many tricks to reel in the money when you are at the top, but it is so hard when a person is in the lower to middle class.

indeed it is supposed to be that way according to the old testament... I can see your Mom in the supermarket overwhelmed in the thought... Hi Whitetea! great poem... Richard

This was about my mom's friend, any suggestions how I can change it so it doesn't mislead? Thankyou for reading.

Hi again...

I wouldn't change it.. I could see both women in the aisle .. only commented on your mom... but now that you've enlightened me I see your poem was indeed about the friend... my bad reading... I've been doing that a lot lately... still loved it.. and looked up Jubilee.. which was informative...and interesting! Richard

writing is like little windows

Lol, no, I understand. It happens sometimes when I read other peoples writing. I comment on a tangent and find out it had absolutely nothing to do with what they really wrote about. Gender references mislead when there are two of the same gender.
