Shades of Gray

Color me in shades of gray
For depression is but a thought away

Let not shadowed thoughts creep
In on velvet slippered feet

Heart, be not  heavy with my tears
Push back the darkness of my fears

Help me silence my mournful sighs
Let me hide my crying eyes

Hi Linda...

depression hits us all in varying ways and times... my Sister is clinically depressed... she says I don't understand it and she is right! but I think I just don't have the luxury of understanding.. or the time.. which ever one fits... In my mind is a depressing place that seems to rear it's ugly head at the worst of times... and I am directed to my bed.. unless I have to do something.. like.. work, feed the family, take the kids to their respective after school activities, and so on.. but I think I know depression... and it knows me.. I think your piece is finished... you could always add more to a poem but when it feels right it is usually done.. I do believe you know depression too... velvet slippered feet.. I can see them, sliding across the floor without the want of picking them up.. sorry for going on like that.. as you can see this subject is close to me as I'm sure most can relate to the poem... This

is a tremendous poem-regards-I am not too bothered by the simplicity of the last two stanzas because the first two are superb- may i congratulate you again on such a good poem , oh christ yes you are good, may i relay another sentiment to your poem, and again may i say the second stanza! i c'ant, i just c'ant, find any words to give this stanza the justice it greatly deserves-thank you for writing this-

The Shades

I am quite sure that I rarely become depressed, it is with Heavy heart that I read these things, and understand more of this curse that collects the thoughts of lovely people and carries them off to places I dare not see, but I do Understand. Beautifully written, and adds another facet to my understanding of others. Thanks, Yours Ian.T

Have

you re-written the last two stanzas they read differently to me now-pink-I like them to be honest-the 2nd stanza to me is absolutely superb, it gave me a buzz to be perfectly honest, if you can excuse my refrain-

Let

me say again Linda the 2nd stanza is exquisite- a cobweb holding dew with its elfin limbs , as if the beads of dew were pearls to be placed around the neck of a deserving orphan girl, that jumps over rivers as if she were a grasshopper of transluscent green.

colour..

Hello Linda, This just resonates...simple, yet describes that dark fog that can envelope you sometimes. Inspired choice of vocabulary...'Colour me shades of grey... Spare and well crafted. Regards, Ellie.

Hi Linda

I think this captures the feeling well. I esp. like the line about velevet slippered feet. Depression often comes quietly. My only suggestion is more even rhythm. E.g., Color me in shades of gray; Sorrow's just a thought away. Let not shadowed thoughts to creep in on slippered velvet feet. and so forth. I enjoyed reading it. I wish I'd written it.

I felt this Linda, but differently

Depression is a plethora of meanings and symptoms. There should be many more words for it. I generally have a cheery, gregarious disposition. Depression hits me like someone turned up gravity. Everything is heavy and hard. On a bad day a success is to get out of bed, wash and eat. It goes in cycles. Some have suggested different diagnoses, like Bi-polar Type 2, or a lazy useless bastard. cheers, Jess

Jess

You will never be lazy or useless. You have an obvious intelligence, and are not as bad boy as you like to portray, me thinks. I saw that in the poem you wrote about your sisters, and you told me you wrote one for you mom, too.

you caught me out, I like to play bad boy

yet have done things prison would not have been punishment enough for. The real point of my comment is that there are many forms of depression and many ignorant ways of dealing with them. cheers, Jess
