MoonShrine

MoonShrine

Deep in the dales of Halleck
Lie the ruins of a great shrine
And there stands an altar
Carved of pure white stone
This is a place of moon-magic
Meant for women alone
But few are those that venture
To place offerings upon the stone

It's said that when the moon's full
The shrine glows with pale light
And on those nights are granted
A maidens most true desire
But danger lies in the old lore
No gift is without price
And those that dare the old ways
Oft pay with their very life

If you visit the dales of Halleck
And happen upon the shrine
Play not with the forces there
Nor speak your innermost thoughts
Beware the gifts of those long gone
You maidens who dare tread
The paths walked by the old ones
Deep in the Moon-Goddess Shrine

With deep respect to the late great Andre Norton whose "Witch World" novels inspired this poem.

Thanks Easy

I apprecate it. Andre Norton was a wonderful Science Fiction/Fantasy writer. One of the first really popular female authors in the genre. I have so many of her books I don't remember how many. Take me to...

Take me to the dale of Halleck and to the Moon-Goddess shrine. I will only ask for one thing, a gift to write good poems. I hope the price will not be too much. I have learnt something reading this piece. Good write and best wishes.

Hi Rett! I am unfamiliar

Hi Rett! I am unfamiliar with Andre Norton. However, this has a *Witches of Eastwick* feel to it; could *poet* be their star-crossed child... born of the Devil's Moon? ~A

I remember that movie

and it really wasn't bad. You really should check out some of Andre Norton's novels. She had a way of bring alternate realities to live. Her wich world novels were awesome. Usually it had the woman as the starring character and sorcery and old lore in it. Really good stuff. She did extensive research into arcane "magic" etc. They had lots of interesting lore in them. Gunnora, the Lady of Green Silences, all sorts of things. Respectfully, Rett: "The only thing observable with the naked eye to exceed the speed of light is rumor" Unknown
