The Mary Lou

The Mary Lou

She was ten days from Nantucket
When the sky, it turned to black.
The skipper cried to his crew,
"Boys we're in its track!"

Wind came howling from the north,
With waves three stories high.
The skipper yelled, "Brace yourself,
And pray we don't all die!"

The deck was slick; the sails all furled,
They tossed the storm-anchor out.
The storm striking like Neptune's wrath,
The craft was spun about.

There came a sick'ning crack
As the anchor-plate tore free!
The sturdy mast was snapped in two
And no mercy had the sea...

The craft was tossed and timbers smashed,
Captain and crew all drowned,
Sad memories are all that's left,
For the Mary Lou went down...

ROTFLMAO

Sorry for the disappointment Richard. I guess I should have named it "The Beverly Ann" but that was MY ex's name and I wouldn't even wish that on a ship. I appreciate the read and comment. Heading for the Texans final pre-season game against Tampa Bay so See Ya. Respectfully, Rett: "If life is a bowl of cherries, why am I in the pits?" Erma Bombeck

Reminds me of the movie A Perfect Storm: right at the end, they crest the waves, and all is calm. But it's not the end, it's the eye - and an even larger wall of water destroys the whole ship. So many songs, movies, and such have been written about shipwrecks: The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald, Evangeline, etc. This poem is up there with them all! Really nice writing here, Rett. ~Jess ---------------------------------------------------- "I hope no one asks me to show them the ropes; I have no idea where they are. Maybe I can pull some strings and find out...." - George Carlin

That was a fantastic movie

and you just happened to pick my two favorite songs. Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot and Evangeline by Emmy Lou Harris. Riverboat Gambler was my old CB handle back when that was popular. Glad you liked it my friend. Respectfully, Rett: "If life is a bowl of cherries, why am I in the pits?" Erma Bombeck

Ahhh, Gordon Lighfoot

I love his music. Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was fabulous. I also loved sundown. Thank you Janice. Respectfully, Rett: "We can all be thankful that Picasso wasn't a plastic surgeon." Rett
