The Discoverer (Revised Version)

The Discoverer

Smiljan, Croatia, his birthplace is the word
Eighteen fifty-six in the year of our Lord
The bladeless turbine he somehow contrived
At the unheralded age of a very young five

During the Panic of Eighteen eighty-four
He first came to the American shore
The “Fire of the Gods” was to be his passion
Electrically he was the master of fashion

Discovered alternating current most astutely
Anything electric he could do absolutely
He fought with Tom, thank goodness for us
After he won, Edison continued to fuss

He built the first rotary engine before
Wankel was born, if you know the score
He built a strangely different boat
With a little black box called a remote

In eighteen ninety-seven, something to know
He beat Marconi to the first radio
He invented the transistor in nineteen oh three
Long before we developed the technology

The “AND” Gate is another of his great hits
Crucial to the computers where we now sit
He was an inventor with an impressive score
He was a discoverer and so very much more

He figured a way to make a battery
Out of the very earth amazingly
Asked for money J.P. Morgan said testily
“We can’t charge for the power and that’s idiocy”

Nikola was brilliant with the worst of luck
Several times rich then poor as a duck
Of phobias the man had his full share
For he couldn’t stand to touch human hair

Spherical objects gave him great fear
But he loved pigeons that much is clear
Eighteen Napkins he used with each meal
Polished his plates and silver with zeal

He never ate from the restaurant menu
The cubic volume of the food was his venue
Always ate alone so no interruptions
To avoid his calculation disruptions

He preferred his numbers divisible by three
Nikola, the past master of electricity
Died in the Hotel New Yorker there in Manhattan
At age eighty-six alone with no money in hand

Tesla died a virgin it’s believed by so many
Because of his aversion to hair he never got any
His discoveries are still bearing fruit to this day
Another use for his inventions may be headed our way

Loved the history lesson

but you know man, I really think this could work much better completely re-written in classic form. Rhyming scheme maybe abba or whatever you choose. It reads more like prose than poetry. You know I would never give you gratuitous shit (well, maybe sometimes, for fun) but I really feel this needs more prosodic (look it up) qualities. cheers, Jess

I concur with Elf

Reading prose it's not bad, but this can work better and have a better read in a more structured form. Sam Decent poem.

Thanks Janice

Nicola Tesla was absolutely awesome. The man could even hold electricity in his hands. *LOL* Thought someone would get a kick out of the cat pic. Respectfully, Rett: "If life is a bowl of cherries, why am I in the pits?" Erma Bombeck

This is a lesson

Thank you Rett for posting this poem, like janice, I have learnt something, not only in history but in turning history into poem. I like the contibutions from Jess, I consider him my father in this site and grateful to have him there. I am looking forward to see how you will bring all the suggestions to bear in your revised 'THE DISCOVERER'. Good choice, or should I call the you 'THE RESEARCHER' poet. Well done and best wishes.

Thank you T.

Well, I revised it and I think it is better. Tesla was an awesome man. The world owes A LOT TO HIS DISCOVERIES. I am pleased that you learned something and yes, I tend to research things, but Tesla has long been an icon to me. Again, thank you. Tesla

Had heard a lot of him from my electronic days, but it is such a pity that we don't really take any notice about Ideas and sometimes scoff at those that come up with them. Maybe we should have an Idea site where these things can be aired, used ,or dismissed, maybe there is one somewhere, Anyhow a good write that made us think and do some research. Thanks again Ian.T

Thank you very much Ian

I am pleased that I managed to bring a very few of his discoveries to light and maybe a few people will research him. His idea for broadcast power is still being bandied about today. An idea site would be a wonderful "idea". Respectfully, Rett: "If life is a bowl of cherries, why am I in the pits?" Erma Bombeck

Cool Mark

He was strange but an awesomely brilliant man. His ideas seemed to come to him full blown and the Mark 1 version was usually the finished version. Thanks my friend. Respectfully, Rett: "If life is a bowl of cherries, why am I in the pits?" Erma Bombeck

Virgin at 85

Havlock Ellis in Psychology of Sex..Dynamic Nature of Sexual Impulse argued that sexual energy can be converted to a great use other than man and woman stuff...I believe Tesla made great use of his energy... akabeks.

He most assuredly did and that's a fact. I don't think it was purposeful though. His aversion to hair probably had most to do with it. All things aside though, he was a genius and genius type people are nearly always very eccentric. Thank you for reading and for giving a very astute comment. oh lawsey lawsey...

A couple things I have to point out before I can heap on the praise: "Eighteen fifty-sis" -> eighteen fifty-six. Young age ofa -> of a (or of) Now on to the important stuff: Number one, excellent subject. Nikola invented it all, and everyone else gets the glory. I had a good chuckle at the "aversion to hair so he didn't get any." line. Nice job except for the little flubs mentioned. :~) ~Jess ---------------------------------------------------- "Just 'cause you have one, doesn't mean you need to be one....."

*LOL*

It's a picture I found a few years ago and decided to add the title to it. Thought it was cute. A drunk cat and you wrote the poem! did you notice the cigarette in his mouth? Will fix bobble ASAP. Thank a lot Jess. *S* Respectfully, Rett: "If life is a bowl of cherries, why am I in the pits?" Erma Bombeck

Worth the effort Rett,

do you agree? I'm certain it got it a bigger readership than the original would have, cheers, Jess

Jess, when you are right, you are right

I agree. Hold on, I think an earthquake is headed that way because I think the earth momentarily stumbled in it's orbit. Seriously though, yes, I do agree and I like it better. Free verse is not exactly my bag. *G* As you can tell. Respectfully, Rett: "If life is a bowl of cherries, why am I in the pits?" Erma Bombeck
