Lyka (Laika)

Lyka(Laika)

Alone and friendless
You wandered the streets
Begging and searching
For something to eat

Death had almost claimed
You for his own
When you were saved
And given a home

You were dressed in strange clothes
And did strange things
But praise and hugs
Made your emotions sing

On a pillar of fire
Your chariot raced
Through the sunlit skies
To cold, empty space

There in the unforgiving heavens
Death claimed one lonely canine
But her sacrifice lit the fire
In the breast of all mankind

(Lyka(Laika) was the first to orbit in space. She lit the fire.)

hmmm...

I like the content, but there seems to be something missing... can't quite put my finger on it. Let me think it over some more, and see if I can figure out what it is. ~Jess ---------------------------------------------------- "Maybe in your vision, you've seen how omniscient is slightly less than divine. Thank you zarul

It is a true story. She was the first to orbit in space. No plans were made for re-entry. If you get a chance, google Lyka or Laika. I appreciate the feedback. Although rhyme is not mandatory in freeform you left the poem with a thud ,it was fine right up until the last line Chrys

oh poor little Laika

we are so cruel. Again I blame the bible "we shall have dominion over the birds and the beasts" We are a all one. Call me a tree hugging hippy but the sheer arrogance over the ineffible and incomprehensible inelligence of whales and dolphins should give us some humility. The Christian religion is wrong and arrogant and very destructive, cheers, Jess

Only you Jess

Could figure out a way to blame the Bible for this. *LOL* Truth is Jess, we were killing animals and stuff long before most people knew doodly about the bible. The intelligence of dolphins and whales is amazing to me as it should be to everyone. We take pains to try to prevent inadvertent injury to them these days, but not all countries feel that way. Fruit flies, monkeys etc. were used by the USSR and us in the early days, but Laika was the first to orbit and that was the USSR and no plan was made for re-entry and so she died. I read her story years ago and I thought that even though she was a dog, she should be remembered. I can't imagine the terror and loneliness she must have felt. Thank you for commenting Jess, I appreciate it. Rett: "Life is like a beach. Salty, gritty, somewhat fishy and at other times, downright crabby!" Rett 2008.

Thanks for this homage to

Thanks for this homage to Laika, Rett. I was vegetarian twice in my life, for the same but different reasons. The second time was after watching a documentary on world eating habits. Eastern cultures routinely have *open air markets* where the lunch/dinner patron could select their dog or cat for that particular day - fresh, as it were. One white cat was boiled alive and skinned on camera. Somehow, I was able to watch the rest of it, but I stopped eating any meat or fish for over 3 years. Since then my family and I have single-handedly decimated a farm full of chickens and turkeys. Fish. Once in while my son (his partner will eat no fowl due to horrid experience of having to behead a chicken for dinner--she was reared in N. Dakota at a childhood friend's grandparents farm) my almost-x and I will occasional eat pork or steak (once or twice a year) Weigh that with the Jain Hindu sect that wear (burkas for all intents and purposes) and have folks sweeping the ground that they not inhale or step on even an insect. Half the world still prizes rhino horns for magical powers, gorilla hands for ashtrays... and guess who their rich purchasers are? Dare we speak of animals routinely worn for fashion? Experiment? Even for human life-saving? A

I can understand some of that turning a person off meat. I grew up in the country and butchering hogs, wringing chicken necks, eating squirrel and rabbit was second nature and most times a matter of survival. One time our old milk cow, Bossy. kicked mama through the stall for the last time. She was a mean one. Mama came back, took the shotgun and blam, no more Bossy. We ate pretty good for awhile though. Talking about eating Dog and cat, the Native American tribes ate dog and considered it a delicacy. China has told the restaurants around the Olympics not to serve dog to westerners under any circumstance. I can't be sure, but I think our neighbors to the south eat dog also, but might be wrong. Eating sheep or goats I don't understand. To me they stink bad and taste worse. I can remember about the only thing good daddy did for me was put a watermelon on a stump and have me shoot it with the shotgun. He then told me to put it back together. When I said I couldn't, he said "That's right and if you carelessly shoot someone, they can't be put back together either." Rett: "Life is like a beach. Yeah, the little snippets are what makes the person the person. I tend to find people fascinating. The little snippet about why you quit meat for awhile was just another little piece of life than gave me a better understanding. Thank you. Rett: "Life is like a beach.
