The Night

The Night

The evening quiet decends like falling rain,
Crisp and cool with a nip in the air.
Wind sighing and the sound of a passing train,
the mournful wail fading in the distance
Leaves rustling and the moon full and fair.
Stars studding the heavens like twinkling gems,
An owl passes by on silent wings.
A lone car flashes its lights, brightens, then dims,
Down the road the church choir sings...
"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound..."
The little brook gurgles happily over each stone,
The aroma from a kitchen where the windows aren't down
And a soft rustling in the grass says you're not alone.
The sound of laughter traveling on the breeze,
A cottony fluff of cloud passes overhead.
The sound of someone's sneeze,
Lights going out as people prepare for bed.
A Thunderhead rising up over the distant hills,
A quick, stuttering flash of light
And the roll of thunder elicits children's squeals!
Time to turn in and bid the world goodnight...

The Night

Nice write, Rett. Caught that rhyme, too. Upon my first read, I had to look back because some of the events seemed out of order, i.e. sounds like a clear sky and full moon, fluff of cloud, thunderhead - but it does make sense. (Aren't you glad we straightened that out? LOL) One minor change then, "it's" is not the possessive - a common mistake - lose the apostrophe for the possessive. ~ Ronda

Sheesh

I hate it when I miss something like that. I pride myself on my editing and it really gripes me to miss something that simple. *LOL* Thanks so much for reading and commenting. I was trying for a subtle rhyme scheme that would give the appearance of free verse and see if anyone caught it. Guess I didn't quite make it.*chuckle* Thank you very much Ronda. Even spellcheck misses that one, don't feel bad! *grin* Nice attempt at being sneaky. Next time don't give it away with your comment, though. LOL I'm kidding, I noticed the rhyme before I reached the bottom. ~ Ronda

You almost got away with your sneaky sneak! I immediately looked for a structure (acrostic, etc.) and then found the rhymes. I liked the end the best where the thunder got the children to squeal in delight. There aren't too many things that are as uplifting as hearing laughter. Nice job, friend. ~Jess K. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ~"Save the trees, wipe your ass with an owl..." ~"The grass may be greener on the other side, but it still needs to be mowed..."

very peaceful

wonderful images with a calming background like a lullaby! my favorite lines? The little brook gurgles happily over each stone, The aroma from a kitchen where the windows aren’t down And a soft rustling in the grass says you’re not alone. The sound of laughter traveling on the breeze, regarding the third line "Wind sighing and the sound of a distant train"...I had a feeling as if there was a line missing that describes the distant train...that sentence does not sound complete! otherwise, this was truly enjoyable...thank you Rett!

My goodness, you are sharp. I didn't even notice I had failed to transfer a line. It should read "Wind sighing and the sound of a distant train, the mournful wail fading in the distance". You are extremely sharp ma'am and I do appreciate you actually realizing a line was missing. You really read one don't you? *S* May I say that I think you are truly amazing. My most profound respects, Rett: "At twenty, if you are not a Liberal, you have no heart. At Thirty, if you are not a Conservative, you have no brain." Winston Churchill

just a tiny suggestion

Thank you Rett...I'm not as sharp as you think...it's probably just a coincidence! I just thought that since you used "distance" at the end of your sentence then you may need to replace "distant train" with another synonym. Possibilities? travelling train Whistling train Vanishing train or “Wind sighing and the sound of a passing train, the mournful wail fading in the distance”

Once again

I must thank you. It has been corrected. I try to pride myself on my editing and not posting sub-par material, yet once in a while. *LOL* Thank you. Rett: "At twenty, if you are not a Liberal, you have no heart. At Thirty, if you are not a Conservative, you have no brain." Winston Churchill
