The Night
The Night
The evening quiet decends like falling rain,
Crisp and cool with a nip in the air.
Wind sighing and the sound of a passing train,
the mournful wail fading in the distance
Leaves rustling and the moon full and fair.
Stars studding the heavens like twinkling gems,
An owl passes by on silent wings.
A lone car flashes its lights, brightens, then dims,
Down the road the church choir sings...
"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound..."
The little brook gurgles happily over each stone,
The aroma from a kitchen where the windows aren't down
And a soft rustling in the grass says you're not alone.
The sound of laughter traveling on the breeze,
A cottony fluff of cloud passes overhead.
The sound of someone's sneeze,
Lights going out as people prepare for bed.
A Thunderhead rising up over the distant hills,
A quick, stuttering flash of light
And the roll of thunder elicits children's squeals!
Time to turn in and bid the world goodnight...
