The Beaten

I. Shattered

it started with a statue:
            the naked dancing woman
and continued with a fist

My mother fell down with her:
            the statue.
Shattered plaster and concussions
left my mother curled up
like the skeleton of a building
abandoned in the rubble of a
            hate bombing.

 (I fell down)
            yeah,   right.
you fell,      but
            from where
                        and where to
is another story.

I laid there
in a bitter bed
                       next to her
promising never to be her.
bruises and broken bones
swelled up from broken homes
                                      never really heal.

at that time, she wasn’t my mother
           or      more my mother
                                     than ever before.

II. At the Woman’s Shelter

We slept in bunk beds
            Four to a room

Dressers crowded with forsaken
mementos; stolen in a
        desperate moment springing up
                                     fear fountains:
memories only good for drafting fruitless tears.

We were all scared
           (What will become of us?)
mostly of the past.

I sat through
          crutch meetings with my mother
as the others cried along:
they all knew
                      exactly       what it meant
                              to be hurt.

there were seventeen of us
            and six small children:
whose crying reminded me of
                                    Ave Maria

we were all lost
                A maze of spaghetti
                for twenty plus.

we were all hurt

               Therapy was the only
loose link that kept us chained

to each other and our pasts

                and rusted into our skins
                scraping every one of us

     like tetanus clockwork.

It’s one of those

It's one of those heart-breaking poems one wishes no-one would have to write. thank you... well done... therapy is a scab, pulled off again and again. Therapy is a scab pulled off again and again, the mind relinquishes nothing the body remembers and here it is again... o so bloody tasting of the metal of a fist. hugs, Anna

Thank you Lynn… for the

Thank you Lynn... for the inspiration... Bless you and yours. The finished poem: Therapy 1. Therapy is a scab pulled off again and again, the mind relinquishes nothing the body remembers and here it is again... o so bloody tasting of the metal of a fist. 2. The ancient ones cut my heart out once and offered it to the Gods once in awhile the emptiness screams 3. I don’t actually get it, standing in front of a *captive* audience, to say your *name* and then add *I am an alcoholic* if you’ve given up the drink, can’t you give up the label? 4. Can there be a raging war, if not for the sense of I and You, my body my mind, my possessions filling in the space between us? A forest always grows towards the sun from the deepest reaches of the earth.

Shattered

Whew! That was tough for me to read. My mother didn't have that option, just took me and left. My other brothers were already married. DAMN FINE WORK! I absolutely could not stop reading! Rett

Firstly I would like to say that this poem not only reflects your experience very poignantly but I think you are a most talented individual. Have you ever considered theater arts or playwriting? This is the stuff plays are made of...Go for it girl! Theresa
