No Hero

Among cheers

and adulation,

he felt despondent

and ashamed,

He was no sainted hero.

No savior of any man.

He was only a surviver ,

on a mission doomed to fail.

He was angry and outraged,

that they celebrated him that day.

For there were fifty living men that left.

But , none came home that way.

Just one lonely,humble soldier,

who managed to survive.

And as he mourns his fallen comrades,

he thanks God he is alive.

Hello,

This is a heavy duty and thought provoking subject. Especially today with all the wars going on in the world. I'm sure this soldier you write of would have many mixed feelings about being the only one to come back alive. I think your words have really captured the situation successfully. Another piece of awesome work. Cat

No Hero

This is great, Lacy. I know there are many soldiers who feel this way. They must be so torn; rejoicing in their own life while mourning the loss of their comrades. Great presentation of this all-too-current subject. ~ Ronda
