Repetend/Smell

With deep breaths, I smell the anticipation of a marathon

thousands lined up and stretching,

waiting for the bang of a gun.

Old race-weary shoes smell of previous struggles

perspiration soaked clothes smell of exhaustion

As my knees buckle, I smell asphalt crushed dreams

Next year I'll try for the sweet smell of victory!

Smell the most evocative sense

Enjoyed the word play and smell imagery in this one Janice...and will you win next year? Mind you i never did quite understand what success smells like.lol. In my day job i actually research on how our sense of smell is organised and how we remember smells so effectively....but thats another story.
