Pastorale

There was a time when the sight of a grazing cow

caused feelings relaxed, spiritual somehow,

but now with the knowledge of ecological grief

caused by production of dairy and beef,

these potential meat patties with cheese

more resemble ambulant, farting fact'ries.

Wait, there's more.

Those long ago felled forests

deserve better remembrance

than cheesy rhyming couplets.

Those nitrated fly-blown fields

could/should bear life/planet sustaining trees,

those fouled dead streams and rivers

could/should be clear living arterials of the land.

From now on when I eat

I think more about the meat.

last night in the paper

The headline was "cow crosses busy street". It being a neighborhood oriented paper the owner was happy. It was a good thing nobody tried to miss it a small miracle. Poor cows just wanna go home I think. Mark

Doing my Part

Hey Jess, I am doing my part. I am trying to eat them bad, bad cows as fast as I can. I have been trying to find financial backer for my "Rama Burger" franchise in India. when I get through eating all the hogs and heifers out there...I am going to start in on Veegans. After all they are made out of meat as well and about as usefull as any high level functioning autistic bovines I have met. Now getting down to the poem, lovely creative and very insightful piece of work. However, I would like to point out if China would cut its greenhouse emmissions to the point say that America is at-regardless of the fact that we didn't sign the Kyoto Accord. Then the fine folks in Bundaberg wouldn't have to worry about ACTUALLY seeing a Polar Bear swim up on their beach. But since it is cheaper to burn coal and the world has a penchant for cheaper goods...then stop shopping at Walmart and those other fine purveyors of cheap goods. It might cost more in your pocket book but hey...you skies wont lokk like they are bleedinng. All my best! -DS Baker

Your final two lines said

Your final two lines said something interesting: I am a carnivore, I accept this, it is who I am. Of course your commentary is dead on before that--and so wonderfully stated--but the carnivore within not denied, I'm pleased your are able to come to terms with him. Some can't, some aren't, many lie to themselves, but some of us; loving the planet, seeing the planet, loving ourselves, seeing ourselves; may be able to make a difference. I am also please your work has generated so much discussion... as it should be.

Farting fadctories :-)

Hi Jess I loved this particular phrase "Farting Factories" :-) and i agree with all the compliments on the flow here!!! Nicely done. Thanks for sharing. Kind regards Feebie Mistakes happen, do not dwell on them, live them, mourn them and move on to better things. (PS: if that does not work eat lots and lots of chocolate)

thanks alobar

I changed those last lines several times and am finally happy- yes I am at peace as a carnivore nonetheless will not be willfully ignorant of ecological ramifications, nor, spiritually, of the sacrifice and treatment of the animals (or plants for that matter) cheers, Jess p.s. I think that vegetarians who make that choice to avoid taking animal life are elitist/specie-ist bastards. Plants have feelings too.

thanks Kaz, hkk, Feebie

glad you enjoyed it. My own problem with it is that it is too didactic. It's so easy to be pure and holier than thou on a subject like this. cheers, Jess

the sight

of a grazing cow still produces calm in me--while i remain blissfully ignorant of everything that the cow suffers as a sacrifice to us. does this poem mean that you're also becoming a vegetarian? can't really tell. in any case, this has a gorgeous flow to it that shows a deeper, if more gruesome, appreciation of nature!

thanks all for your

thanks all for your comments, esp Quill re flow, was not sure personally, once again, if the shift from the near comic couplet form to the seriouser (sic!) freeform added or subtracted. It's a thing I've been playing with a bit lately, cheers, Jess

Factories indeed

There was an article in the N.Y. Times about two weeks ago that suggested the emissions savings from eating just 20% less meat is the same as switching your car to a Prius. Amazing.

Farting Fact’ries. I love

Farting Fact'ries. I love this phrase. There is a livestock farm not far from here that fits that description exactly. :-) This flows like a dream. Nice work ;-) Kaz It's impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside.

The cows around me

are raised for meat. As if they all know, they lead lifeless existences, wandering aimlessly, grazing, lying in mud and shit. I am guilty of purchasing these animals (or 1/4 of one at least) and filling my freezer with their non-existence.... but I am not giving up my steaks, damnit. Best, Ronda
