Smile!!!????

Smile they tell me, it brightens up anothers day

so i smile, and try to maintain this smile in some way

yes i make another's day brighter and more bearable

but who makes my life fit, so that it is more wearable

Smile they tell me, and people will wonder what you are up to

so i smile, and yet, find that there is no wondering of what i do

Instead, there is an air of illusion created from this smile

and outward air of calm, yet within, tumoil rules

Smile they tell me for it will keep one young

so yes i smile, looking at the rest of the “smiling” souls

around and next to me, are these smiles genuine in their origin?

Or are these smiling, cheerful faces just masks for others?

Smile they tell me, you will feel better

So i smile, even on receipt of each and every damn letter

letters of dmeand, letters of threat, and yes even letters of what OTHERS need

I smile, presenting a calm, cheerful exterier

smile they tell me, it makes the world turn

so i smile, yet my anger seems to still burn

i will do as they say, sit and smile with dignity

and take each day in my stride, yet my inner thoughts i hide

Smille they tell me, but do they know?

So i smile for i do not want to show

my pain, my anger, yes even my utter hate for certain things

these emotions are never displayed nor given wings

to soar, to be free, and like a bubble eventually pop, and dissapear

noone wants to see the real me, noone cares

noone wants to see the true scars my soul bears

for they are afraid and shy away from trouble, hurt and pain

so yes, i will smile, i shall “grin and bare it”

but know this, you will be advised the same

and do not look to me to lay the blame

when noone takes notice of your need for realease from your pain

Inner smile

Eliot wrote a line that has stayed with me always "prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet" and your poem reminds me of that. Somehow we are all supposed to put a happy face on for the world and no one can deal with the anger and despair that lies hidden...but that is partly what writing poetry can provide, an outlet where no one expects false and practiced smiles only the truth which, by its writing, is often the means to move on and make the smile become real.
