Upbeat

Today, I heard another heartbeat.

And I really listened.

Two heartbeats that blurred together,

creating melodic paradiddles

and causing mine to grow ever stronger.

For even though the cadences were different,

there was an underlying rhythm...a backbeat, as it were.

And the individual differences blended together,

becoming a shared syncopation,

that complimented the two time signatures.

After a while, there was no mistaking the individual rudiments...

..they were not lost.

They evolved into a pattern, a partnership...

..and blessed were our two souls...

..and great was our dynamic.

For my solitairy heartbeat seemed hollow, alone.

And now, we were in possession of a song.

One that shared a pattern...

of understanding,

hope, and respect.

My heart skipped a beat, today.

I really felt it,

and it mattered, not.

For the other heartbeat was there, and filled in, as well.

Because two syncopated heartbeats.....are a symphony.

Wow! This is hot!

I think the best poem I have read of yours yet. You take your own voice as a musician, deal with the most difficult subject in poetry, love, and come out clean, cliche free. I love this piece. I think it is the most singular success of a poet is to make a work deeply personal yet accessible to others. Vote 5. cheers, Jess
