FLOWERS FLAUNT

Flowers flaunt:
there’s no finesse
petal petticoats flounce and part
                                  and oh…
their sexualities revealed,
                                  on show
Aphrodite’s spawn

Flirtatious flowers:
unashamed hermaphrodites –
no separation
Salmacis insists
          prominent preening males
          all jut and thrust
and timid female dressed to thrill
          combine with honeyed hues
          and subtle sense-seducing scents

all set
to tease and tempt
an airborne intercessor
and Hermes’ waif awaits,
half drunk on nectar dreams,
to fuse and flower
evermore

I suppose she says...

"this is why I love you..." everytime she reads your words. Few words can hold as much beauty as the act of flower and de-flowering but you my friend have done it again. I am proud to be in such company and only slightly brazenly blushed!!! "For every shadow, no matter it's depth, is threatened by the morning's light..." <3 Emarie

She says ...

Well ... “this is why I love you…” that is what my daughter said on reading the long-delayed completion of CONNECTIONS [posted earlier.] Other than that, 'tis the only time. [sobs] Thanks so much for the complimentary blush. Mike Photo: Me, September 7th 2007 - my 66th Birthday. quiet terms

I don't think it is the only time a lady has uttered those words after reading your lexis...but only the whispers will know and I hear they keep a fine secret... "For every shadow, no matter it's depth, is threatened by the morning's light..." <3 Emarie

Arthur or Martha?

Hello Mike I enjoyed this lyrical, almost Walt Whitman type poem. There is a joyous swing to the lines and images like "petal petticoats flounce and part" are delightful. I love the Salmacis reference - the nymph who, according to Ovid, "raped Hermaphroditos and melded with him. Some flowers are indeed hermaphroditic and they do their best to display their lures! I always try to point out a weakness in a poem if I can find it - it might help the poet in improving the poem. In this instance I'd just like to point out that the image "prominent preening male all jut and thrust" is a bit strained. These lines call to mind that phallus-like thing in the middle of some flowers that stick straight out. But we know, of course, that it is called the "style", the female part of the flower. So we have a bit of confusion here. I'm not saying a poem should be a biologically correct description, but in this instance I think the poem is asking too much from the reader in expecting him to switch the roles of the organs. I'm sure you'd be able to find an excellent solution. Kind regards De Waal

Pistils at dawn ...

It was bad poetry not bad biology - I should have written 'males' since I was referring to the male stamens [anther + filament] and not the female pistil assemblage [stigma + style + ovary] Thanks for pointing out the confusion, my friend ... I'll toddle off and add an 's' Mike Photo: Me, September 7th 2007 - my 66th Birthday. Great solution

Hi Mike I THOUGHT you would easily find a solution :}. I'm very happy that you did. Now the poem works like a charm (pun intended). Great!

Is it true

that orchids are the most sexy flower and the most death evoking? Just a stray thought cheers, Jess

Yes I agree Dabbler

I don't think will look at flowers the same way either after reading this. Meic you have brought a brand new perspective to a common theme. I love the flouncing petticoats. These lines are excellent:- half drunk on nectar dreams, to fuse and flower evermore I really enjoyed reading this - thank you Kaz It's impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside.

the secret world of flora

So this is what is going on in my gardens when I'm not weeding??!! Those little tarts! Gorgeous poem, Meic. This makes me long for a warm day in early summer when the blossoms are full and the landscape alive. ~ Ronda

Shock! Horror!

Thanks Ronda, Though I'd better abandon plans for the sequel - the Love Life of Lichen - now that's REALLY hot! Mike Photo: Me, September 7th 2007 - my 66th Birthday. Guernsey, Channel Islands, UK For my own orginal graphic art please visit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/7911705@N07

tisk, tisk...

I am pretty sure I could have gone my entire life without that visual... "For every shadow, no matter it's depth, is threatened by the morning's light..." <3 Emarie

nah lady,

My worm farm is a delight! I don't eat them, it's like a hyper-effective compost heap. They fornicate merrily and quite noisily, if you are impertinent enough to listen, and turn all your kitchen scraps (minus meat, citrus and onions, which kill them) into very rich garden food. I am sure Chuck would approve. cheers, Jess

Count me deaf to such sounds...

and I will happily leave you to your worm farm and their merry fornications. haha And just bid to wish you a Happy New Year...worms and all!!! "For every shadow, no matter it's depth, is threatened by the morning's light..." <3 Emarie

I have to add my two cents

The thought of listening to worms fornicate (or worms fornicating at all, for that matter) made me a little giggly this morning. Perhaps Jess should write an ode to his worms? I would find that interesting. Happy New Year, everyone! ~ Ronda
